Talking 8800gts 640mb overclocking - 05-10-2007, 01:48 | posts: 179 | Location: newcastle upon-tyne UK | User is Offline

Got manli-8800gts 640mb and was wondering wot is the best settings ie, numbers to overclock my card? Ive got ntune and rivatuner. Ntune is so i can monitor my gpu temp and riva to turn my fan up 100%. On ntune u can overclock your gpu automatically and it gives you a optimal setting. So stock my card is 513/792mhz. Ntune puts it up to 645/1048mhz. but when i do it on riva you have to do it manually. so i just put these numbers in from ntune. i could go alot higher using riva but dont know if i should. my temps is 55c and 76c playing games.

First piece of advice from somebody who has lots of experience with overclocking. Never rely upon auto detect to give you stable/accurate results. Manual is always better, more time consuming but safer.

I run mine at 650/980 in riva which gives me 648/972. These are perfectly fine performance and stability wise, the card will go upto 670/2000.

NO piece of equipment is identical to that of the same type. SO, your 8800 gts is not identical to any other. Therefore, all 8800GTS' will overclock differently, you might be able to get 600/900 clocks like me, but another person may be able to reach 700/1000 due to there graphics cards capabilities. You can't just jump into overclocking, what??, you want to kill your 8800GTS faster than it took you to save up for it?? Max temps I say are about 82'C load and 65'C idle, but I have still heard of 8800GTS' dying when they were still well within temperature limits. Others get really high clocks due to their cooling systems, eg watercooling or good airflow. If you haven't got a clue what you're doing, then I suggest you do not overclock at all.

At some point none of us had a clue, doesn't mean we shouldn't have tried it

read this first - it's a little old but the method is the same.

So what your saying is i should put it back to stock? Ive read a bit about overclocking and understand some of the basics its just a bit confusing how people are coming up with different numbers when they overclock their cards. I understand that there might be slight differences between cards but some of the numbers im seeing especially on this forum is quite vast. Is there not a guide to overclocking certain cards or do you just trust to trial and error or hearsay? And yes i agree these cards are expensive and dont wanna fry it. appreciate your input guys. still confused tho.

Overclocking is always trial and error, temperature is your number one enemy so make sure you have good case cooling. There are a few things you can do such as tidy your cabling up so the airflow doesn't get impeded inside the case, make sure you have at the very least one decent intake fan. You can use rivatuner to set the graphics card fan to 100% constantly (or any other value) to help cool your card better as it will otherwise only speed up once the temps reach 76-80C.

Use AtiTool to scan for artifacts, if you have any artifacts over the course of an hour then your card isn't stable at those clocks (most usually the memory which causes artifacts). If the core is too high then it's more likely to crash the 3d app or lock-up the computer.

I should point out you probably won't see much of a performance boost due to your cpu holding the card back a little.

u read my mind the next thing was temp levels, already have fan at 100% coz it was at 86c playing games, now 74c. only intake ive got is for the cpu. was thinking of getn a fan to pull some extra air into case possibly directed at gpu? gotta cut side of me case then??? mmm tricky.

UNINSTAL NTUNE RIGHT AWAY!! You dont need it as rivatuner will tell ya all you need to know. NTUNE is VERY buggy and can scramble your bios (esp on 680i boards). Dont believe me? I hope Im wrong in your case.

Just increase the core clock in 32 mhz increments, then the mem clock. Expect to top around 600/900 if your lucky.
