Default Weird 8800GTS 320mb Problem - 03-20-2007, 04:56 | posts: 6 | User is Offline

Hi

I am having a very weird problem since I built my new gaming rig and have tried everything I can think of to sort the problem but to no avail. When i am playing a game of say Company of heroes and the loading screen(mission breifing) ends my fps is shown at 20-30fps....I then alt-tab out of the game and go back in and the FPS is 60-70 at the exact same place? The game will then be fine and run at about 60-70fps until the next level starts at which point the fps will drop back down again until I alt-tab out and it returns to 60-70 again. I also get the problem in Oblivion where I will load into a new area and the fps will be about 20 and stutter like mad....alt-tab and go back in and its 50-60 and smooth as butter?

I have tried everything I can think of including running my oc'd 8800GTS at stock speeds, Running my oc'd E6600 at stock, installin ms hotfix for dual core, setting affinity to single core etc....Im not sure if it's a problem with dual core or even the cpu itself but I just don't know what to do. My specs are as follows:-

E6600 & 3.3GHZ (370*9)
2GB Geil ULL DDR2 800 4-4-4-12 (740mhz)
Asus P5B Deluxe/Wifi (Latest Bios 1004)
BFG Geforce 8800GTS 320mb (Latest Nvidia Drivers)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB Sata2
Creative Audigy 2
OCZ Powerstream 520w (33a on single 12v)
Windows XP SP2

Any ideas what to do? Thanks in advance.

Hello

Yes i have tried the WHQL ones and all the betas on guru3d with the same results. It only happens on certain games though...out of the 5 games i tried it happened on Company of heroes, Oblivion and supreme commander but I didn't have the same problem on world of warcraft or pro evolution soccer 6. I downloaded a Video memory program to monitor how much Vram the games were using and the 3 I am having problems with were using like 310vram and wow and pes6 were usin 150-200. I am not sure if this is the problem and why alt-tab would fix it? but if it was the problem then everybody with a 320mb 8800gts that used large textures in oblivion at 1280x1024 should be complaning of it also.

Some guru's have a similar problem.
Have you tried a solid mobo chipset driver?
Or have you just tried different graphics drivers?

I'm having the same problems. I already posted in the other thread:

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=218484

Figured I'd bump this as well. It'd be great if we could get some help from someone in the know about this. I've been fighting the problem for over a month and making no headway.

Same problem with FEAR Combat as well, however let me throw these 2 tidbits of info into the mix.

1) This problem ONLY happens to me on certain maps, namely Factory and Waterworks. Other maps such as Construction, Docks, etc run incredibly smooth even after hours of play.

2) This problem started for me when I first went to Vista (32bit), and now I'm on 64bit and same problem, however I had an eVGA 7900GT at that time, and the severity of the issue was identical and the exact same symptoms on the same maps.

Because of these 2 things it leads me to believe the problem has nothing to do with any of the 8800 series cards in general, but rather something goofed up with FEAR and VU Games needs to release a patch, or the nVidia Forceware drivers in general in Vista needs to fix it.

Also I've been reading around and posting about this all over and have already tried all posted supposed "fixes" including disabling HID devices, disabling Logitech and Creative software, etc and nothing helps.

I'm having the same issue with FEAR (mainly "extraction pont", but does it in "Combat" as well). One minute, my frames are well above average, the next, it's a slide show. If I save the game and return, all is buttery smooth for maybe 5-10 minutes, and it repeats. I,ve used Rivtuner to see my Vram memory usage and it too was right around 305/310 when the low FPS drop off into slideshow haven.
I,ve followed all the tricks to the trade with no avail. This is on Windows XP home SP2.

Sounds like your hitting the memory limit of your card, once you hit the limit it will start to crawl, and when you ALT+TAB to get out and go back, that is clearing the memory so your frames will shoot back up, but it will crawl again when the memory fills up again, does it do it with everything maxed, and if so have you tried reducing every detail setting to see if its the same.

similar problem for me in FEAR: fraps sometimes go down to about 10-15 and most of the time they are about 60. I believe is the system running out of video memory especially now that I game at 1680x1050 (should have bought the 640MB version!!!)

I also had this problem sometimes with BF2 but a new install the windows and everything resolved it.

I also have a very weird problem overclocking my gfx: core is ok but I can't overclock the memory at all (I can but speeds remain the same). I ended up changing the memory speed via bios to 1800 but i don't know it limits...so I am not pushing more.
