really weird problem with a radeon 9550 card and DVI adaptor -

hi guys,
I have a really weird problem with a 9550 card
I have had for ages two screens on this card 2 analogue screens, one with a DVI adapter. all WAS fine. Until now the screen with the DVI adapter wont show anything apart from black.
The monitor works fine on another PC, the DVi port on the card works fine (without a DVi connector, ive tried it on a digital screen.
So i cant get the DVI port to work with a DVI adaptor. ok so i thought DVI adaptor is busted, tried it in another pc, and the DVi adaptor works fine!! ggrrr
Tried another DVi adaptor anyway just incase but no luck.
This is nuts!
ok so i thought the driver might be to blame, tried uninstalling the ATI cat driver, and installing the newest driver, but it wont install error message is INF Error, no VGA card found (and correctly they are Yellow exclaimation marked in dev manager).
Ok so i thought ill install an older driver 5.1 cat. That went on ok, and thats where i am now. With this driver two screens are working a pure analogue one and a pure digital one (no DVI adapter).
If i try the DVI adapter with an analogue screen its still black.
I know this black screen is working because of the way its responding, ie to resolution changes, (the GUI of the monitor tells me the res has changed etc) But i see no PC output.
yes the contrast is up lol
Guys anyone help a mad IT guys.
thanks for the help.

Check the refresh rates. Set them to something you know your monitor supports and see if that fixes it. If not, try a clean driver install and try installing Omega drivers. (if somehow ati 7.2 dont work, they should tho 9550 is supported)

Did you make any changes at all from the time it worked until it didn't?
If you didn't touch anything, then I would say the card is going bad. If it worked one day and just stopped working the next, without you changing a thing. Well, you get the idea. Can't really be the driver if that didn't change.
Really, sounds to me like the card is starting to go bad. Not the entire card, but one or more components are starting to fail or get weak. The analog converter, over time, could have weakened the chips that do the DVI. And now it will only work with DVI without the converter.
I have not personally seen this exact issue, but I have seen similar things happen to video cards. Even though the fan is the only moving part, video cards (and electronics in general) can wear out over time. Especially if there is exesive heat involved.
Time for a new video card?
