    thing is still works fine?

run BF2 and GTR full whakc, totoally fine?

If it wasn't there for a reason, then they wouldn't have put it there in the first place. It obviously does something, I just don't know what.

yeah I know but the games still run brilliently with everything maxxed out!

so er..like what does this specific capacitor do then?

p.s broke it when I was taking it out lol

    hm

Cap's Hold a charge that can be released quickly so it probably is used when it needs a quick boost of energy doing something.

Id see if you could RMA it. If not and its running fine.. Well its your card.

Heck if your any good with soddering id put that thing back on.

    solder it back on.
    super ez fix.

you don't even have to have it back on there how it was either.

just solder some thin copper wires (like phone wire) to the two spots on the pcb where the capacitor broke off, and soder the capacitor onto the ends of the two wires.

it will dangle a bit, but it's better than heating up the back of the pcb to free the old pins, or trying to squeeze the soldering iron in some low profile way to re-attach things.

last thing you want to do is take too long and overheat the pcb and make the depth-bridging-cylinders inside get free (which would break connectivity between the different internal layers). which can happen if you're not well practiced and you take too long to get the remains of the old stuff free.

Just ask EVGA on what to do.

Yeah I would try to solder it back on but I'm fairly comfortable soldering. If you've never really soldered before I wouldn't attempt it becasue there is a good chance something bad will happen, and if it's still working now there is a good chance it wonn't work after messign around with it, lol! Just ask someone you know to do it for you who does know what their doing if your not up for it. Last but not least, although it seems to working fine there is probably a good reason it was there in the first place so I'm sure something is suffering because of the missing cap? Good luck, that sucks it broke off.

i think that will get your warranty voided really quickly.

I had the same thing happen to my 7900gt when I was cleaning my case a few months back. They sent me a replacement (took 2 weeks total). Evga is top notch with replacing things. It just sucks being without a card for that time.

I wouldn't take the chance if I were you, telling them you broke off a capacitor while removing the card would be bad! Then again if it worked for dshramek than maybe their most relaxed about that stuff than I'm thinking? If anything just say it stopped working and you don't know why, lol!

you cant just solder it back on, those things are punch soldered on so fast by a machine you cant do it without heating the board and ruining it. it can be cold soldered only. ask a professional to fix it for about 50 bucks or rma it.only way if you continue to run it like you got it now it will surely fail in time.

thanks for the info guys.but mmm. some people are saying solder it back on, others are saying not to?

does anyone knwo what this capciotor does?

I mean if the card is working fine at the moment, I'd rather not risk soldering.

Also my warranty is buggered I think cos I tore the s/n label (oops!) lol

    any ideas?

take it to a pro to solder it on mate asap ! ;-)

the thin loss wire trick will work ok.

    You really should RMA it.

    If you can't:

    1) Soldering is a good option. Soldier two small wires to the two headers. It requires some skills though.
    2) oldest trick in the book, get some superglue and push it back hard onto the PCB. But make sure the two "poles" have contact.

thanks for response guys, I was thinking about just gluing it back on; making sure of course that its "metal to metal contact"

Also once I either glue or solder the capacitor back on, how durable will my card be? I mean what If I wish to overclock the card, is it more likely to fail , or will it be good as new if I do a good job of getting that capacitor back on?

Stock speed on the 7950GX2 is 500Mhz Core /1200Mhz Memory

My EVGA is 550Mhz Core /1400Mhz Memory

and I've had it to 625Mhz Core / 1640Mhz Memory before.

so are these speeds still possible?

thanks for all your help so far guys!

    ok this is very interesting:

I have looked at images of the 7950GX2 online and all the cards ONLY show there being 3 capacitors in the 1st place!! see images!!

XFX, EVGA, MSI, GAINWARD,BFG, all have 3!

could it be that becuse my card is a "superclocked" version it requires more capacitors!!???

Can anyone check there 7950GX2 and let me know how many you have!! :)

Heh nice find .. okay i have four GX2's here 2x ref 2x XFX .. none of them have a capacitor on the red dot as shown in the top image.
