Default Drivers for x1700 Mobility - 10-24-2006, 05:20 | posts: 9 | User is Offline

G'Day all,

i bought an Asus A8JP Notebook with an Ati x1700 Mobility 256mb (512MB HyperMem).

Asus has only really old drivers available, and atm i am trying to get some new ones installed. I am not lucky, the original drivers and omega do not install. DNA is somewhat old.

I tried hacking the installers to recognize my card, but in the end it says "Try isntalling a vga standard adaptor first" which is shown in the device manager already after i removed all ati stuff and did a reboot.

when i try to manually install the omega drivers for example, it says for the omega drivers from the omega folder "drivers do not support xp" o_0
really weird.

thing is, the vga adapter shows this yellow exclamation mark, so i tried to actualize the drivers for it in the device manager, but winxp only offers old ati drivers (rage 128 etc ) for it, doesnt offering a default driver for vga adaptors.

any ideas how to get it to work?

i really need new drivers as i develop some kind of 3d application.i use xp prof. sp2 with all patches.

with regards,
kkoeter

You could try adding compatibility to the Mobility Catalyst drivers yourself, otherwise you may have to just stick with the Asus provided drivers until the next Mobility Catalyst release.

i guess about 10 percent... (speaking about the mobility version)
i'm sorry i have only some comparisons in german available. the x1700 mob. is only built with "stretched silicon" so it a ibt faster but doesnt take more energy.

gothic3 plays okay so far

ok, i'll try to explain it to you. if you are the lazy guy, you can send me a private message and i'll send you the modified inf files, which is all you need to do.

first, i do not take any warranty for what you are doing with your computer. it worked for me, and consider that it could fail ( for unknown reasons) on your pc. dont blame me then. so do a backup of all your data, please
and note that i can only speak for windows xp as operating system (others should work, though).

1) go to omegadrivers.com and get the proper driverse for your system.

2) extract the ( 7zip) self-extracting archive to a folder (best: desktop).

3) then duplicate the folder and name it "driver_backup" or something similar so you have two versions, one as backup if something goes wrong so you can easily restart modifying.

4) open up the system controls. open "system". under "hardware" switch to the device manager. look up for your ati card and open it. go into the "details" and write down the (marked by default) something called like a "device instance ID".
it should look like this line:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71D5&SUBSYS_12421043&REV_00\4&2D4 04BB6&0&0008

do you see the DEV_, followed by the real device ID: 71D5
there are at least two version of the x1700 mobility, so if you have the same ID here, i can send you my modified drivers, otherwise. go forward to step 5.

5) take this instance ID, open up a new text (.txt) document on your desktop and paste it in.
out of this ID, build a stirng like i did:

"ATI Mobility Radeon X1700" = ati2mtag_M66, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71D5&SUBSYS_12421043&REV_00\4&2D4 04BB6&0&0008

the name for the card, followed by a string for the mobility chipset ID: the M66 ( i guess you own the same if you have the x1700 mobility ).

save the document.

6) go into your extracted-drivers-root folder, open up the file"INSTALL.INI":

you will see a block like the following:

R6=DriverPath_R6,0x71D5,0x496E,0x5961,0x5941,0x415 0,0x4170,0x4E44,0x4E64,0x4148,0x4E48,0x4168

do you see the 0x71D5 there? i pasted my DEV_ ID there ( it seems to be a list of "supported ati devices". if you have your ID in there, you can save and quit.

if you want, you could change the "default bootup resolution" to a new one (i did so)...

[BootResolution]
DALDefaultModeBCD=1024,0768,0032,0060

for 1024x768 instead of 800x600, you can choose anyone you want to and where you are sure youre display works with it... 0032 seems to be the color bit count and 0060 the refresh rate. i recommend not editing them.

7) open up "CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.ini" from the same (drivers root) folder and repeat step 6! be sure to do the same changes.

8) open the subfolder "2KXP_INF\" and open "CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.inf". here comes the biggest and longest part. after that you are almost finished!

9) search for a section called ";Extra support added for the following cards by Omegadrive:" (its the second-last section of the graphics-vendor-ist on the beginning of the document)

add your previously built string in there:

"ATI Mobility Radeon X1700" = ati2mtag_M66, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71D5&SUBSYS_12421043&REV_00\4&2D4 04BB6&0&0008

which is my version of the string (see step 4)

scroll down the document, leave behind the last vendor list (FireGL). you should get to the:

;
; General installation section
;

first block is the "[ati2mtag_default]" block. you'll notice that all of the blocks are kinda installation instructions for the different chipsets.

so scroll down to a block called "[ati2mtag_M56]" and copy it.
i choose it because it sounded most similar to our chipset, the M66.

copy, and paste it directly in after the M56 block and rename it to:
"[ati2mtag_M66]". be sure to leave a blank line before and behind the block, like its done in the rest of the document.

things like this we'll do now a few times.

scroll down again. if you reach:

;
; File sections
;

i don not recommend it, but i tell it in case you want to speed up your driver installtion procedure ( i wanted that).

you should see a quite long list of files there. if you look long enough, you'll discover, that the driver commonly copies the help files in ALL available languages over to your hardrive. (bah).
i removed all .hlx and .cnt files that had other names than "enu" (english?), "ell" (?) and "deu" (german) in it. i recommended to keep those, at least "enu" and "ell" files. dont touch any other files with other endings!

scroll down to:

;
; Service Installation
;

Yeah, the services section: [ati2mtag_default.Services]
scroll down again to the M56 block and copy it. paste it. rename the new one again, to one that looks like this:

[ati2mtag_M66.Services]
AddService = ati2mtag, 0x00000002, ati2mtag_Service_Inst, ati2mtag_EventLog_Inst
AddService = Ati HotKey Poller,, Ati2evxx_Generic_Service_Inst, Ati2evxx_EventLog_Inst

ok, now: scroll,scroll,scroll to:

;
; Software Installation
;

search for [ati2mtag_M56.SoftwareSettings]. copy, paste, rename to M66.
thanks.

go further and saearch for the next section:

[ati2mtag_M56_SoftwareDeviceSettings]. again: copy the whole section, rename it to M66. be sure to copy the whole section, its quite long. make sure to not forget any line.

almost done

search for [ati2mtag_default.GeneralConfigData]
copy the block, paste, edit into

MaximumDeviceMemoryConfiguration=256
MaximumNumberOfDevices=4

almost on the end of the document there is a list of the (help)-files again, which i obviously forgot to edit on my first attempt, but as said before, it worked perfectly. you could edit the file list again and remove the unnecessary files but its not important. i guess you could also set an 0 instead of an 1 there. but if you havent changed anything earlier, leave this list, too.

ok, save the file and close it. uninstall all ati drivers and the catalyst control center. i also do run the drivercleanerpro available from guru3d.com... then do a reboot and run the setup.exe from your extracted driver folder again and i hope it worked out for you, too...

Can anybody confirm whether the new 6.10 drivers could support X1700(M66) now? Since the 6.9 drivers came out when the X1700 was not officially released...(i think).

I am not sure. I wouldnt count on ATI, neither Asus. Maybe u get support over Omega, but it could be delayed, too.

I'd recommend to edit them yourself, its a thing of 10minutes...

OMG this is infurating! I can't believe that neither Ati or ASUS are supporting this card, considering how new it is, and we as end users shouldn't have to go through all this cr@p to get things working!

I seriously thought that by buying something new I 'd be covered for at least 2 years with things like support software etc!
Sorry just vending out!

here u see a classic case where the chicken came b4 the egg....the tech is there but theres no soft to support it. looks like you will have to wait until ATi decide to add drivers into their mobility cats otherwise. 3rd party drivers look like the 1s that u will be using until then

OK, the 6.12 drivers are out. Does it support X1700 now? I read somewhere (here http://www.phoronix.net/forums/archi...php/t-514.html) that it now supports X1700 but theyre using another OS and the ATI site did not state that it supports X1700. Any ideas?
