Default Problems with X700 Pro and Catalyst 6.8 - 09-11-2006, 01:53 | posts: 1 | Location: Maryland, USA

I downloaded the Catalyst 6.8 drivers to upgrade the 6.3 I currently have. Prior to installing 6.8, I used the ATI Unistall to remove the old drivers then rebooted. I then installed the 6.8 drivers (and yes, the .net stuff is installed too) and rebooted as required. Although I do not get any errors during installation and the ATI control center appears in the menu as always, the drivers appear to be acting strangely. I noticed right away that when I try to move a window across the screen, it is slow to react and the window I'm moving 'jumps' to the new location rather than making a nice smooth transition as it did under the old drivers. I didn't even bother trying any of my games since I was getting this oddball behavior in a the 2D desktop enviroment. I uninstalled 6.8 and reinstalled 6.3 and everything is back to normal.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there just some setting that is goofed up after install that I can change/fix? Here's my setup:

Gigabye mobo w/KT400 chipset
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
1GB DDR333
ATI Radeon X700 Pro w/256MB RAM
MS Windows XP Pro SP2

Thanks for any help.

I dont have a x700 but on my agp x800 sapphire my comp locks up trying to go into standby.

Not sure if the driver clashes with the unlocked pipes or if the 6.7-6.8 drivers werent properly tested with these series of cards. Read on some other forums that people are having issues with the x700 on both 6.7 and 6.8 drivers.

I have a similar problem when installing cat drivers with my X850 pro. I tried 6.8, and my games wouldn't run plus I got some kind of 'slowness' when browsing websites with IE. The only way I fixed this was by using Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode after uninstalling the drivers through control panel.

Even after I got the 6.8's working, I had another problem with all my games locking up my computer and then shutting down the video card. It had to do with some new task it installs on task manager. I had to shut that off too, then revert to 6.3.

I had a problem with my x700pro when i got the new drivers. The screen would start to flicker on and off. It would start doing this faster and faster until it finally didnt come back until i reboot. I uninstalled and got the omega drivers and it runs smooth.
