Default Windows freezes, no hardware acc. fixes it - 09-06-2006, 16:59 | posts: 22

Hi guys, i'm hoping some gurus can help me sort this problem out;

Whenever i am to watch TV or video from a webpage or use live messenger, windows freezes with 100% CPU usage.

Turning the hardware accelleration to "none" solves the problem, but turns off all the cool stuff for gaming, so i have to change the setting all the time.

What can be done to prevent this from happening?

i run XP SP2, Gainward 7800 GS AGP, Syncmaster 204B, all with the latest drivers and fixes.

Thank you!

uninstall all your codecs, and install the latest version of the Klite codec pack

i was getting a similar error when running both IE and FF, trying to load a WMP applet in a webpage, i eventually found out it was due to a bad codec (after constant reinstalls of WMP)

i run XP Pro, no media center.

i have today tried many different codecs packages, with or without removal of org. codecs, and the problem is still there.

i have also config. all other players in my system to avoid conflicts w/ windows mediaplayer.

In IE the movies starts briefly, and then freeze.

i will really appreciate any further tips.

Thank you.

Hi Cippolini,

I've had the same problem on my fresh install of XP. Another area that would bring my system to its knees was the NVidia control panel's Video & Television section. Just entering the config killed my machien.

BUT...I just solved it (!) ...although somewhat magically so I can't tell you waht to do. Here is what I have done in order:

+install 92.91_forceware_winxp2k_english_beta
+set NVidia control pannel's 3D settings, Appearance qualtiy setting to 'use ma preference emphasising: quality
+removed s-video to television (which the card was aware of)
+kill hw acceleration
+apply sp2
+enabled hw acceleration

Hope this helps...

Edit: an interesting point is that i had also run the 3Dmark05 free benchmark test. the 'pre fix with hw accelleration' value was low...about 2800. once the video problem was fixed, i got 6200

Thank you!

Still have the problem though. i am having the same problem as you with nvidia control panel, it freezes when going to the tv & video settings.

Could the problem be in the Nvidia control panel? any others having this problem, and has solved it?

To repeat the problem, IE explorer freezes when trying to watch video or tv, and changing hardware accelleration to none fixes it.

Hi,

Try going in to WMP settings and under the 'performance' tab should be a 'video acceleration' section (at the bottom). Click on 'advanced' here and then on the new page should be 'video acceleration' section again. Uncheck the option of 'use high quality mode' (if it is on) and then retry yor videos in the browser.

Although not ideal, it may help.

Try disabling fastwrites in your AGP settings or the bios.
That might fix it. You don't need it and it usually fixes problems like this.
If that doesn't work try updating your chipset drivers or reinstalling the graphics drivers in safe mode.
Sometimes windows file protection doesn't like it if a driver updates some files and puts them back to the old ones. This leaves half the drivers files new and half old. This is reason that you should do a fresh install of XP when you change from ATI to Nvidia.

Are you getting any other errors in the event viewer?

Thanks for these tips.

Still the same problem though.

In eventviewer there is a warning from Windows defender, but i have disabled defender and still have the problem. i have updated all drivers and bios also. Strange thing. a few months ago i changed graphicscard from Gainward Nvidia 4800 SE AGP to Gainward Nvidia 7800 GS AGP and i have updated with the latest drivers along the way, but unfortunately i cannot tell exsactly when the problem started. i will try to install the org driver to the card and see what happens. i also changed soundcard at the same time, from Audigy 2 to Xfi extreme music.

seems i may have to live with this, but all worked fine with the old stuff, so i see no reason why it shouldn't work.

a long shot but... if in your bios you have PCI Delayed Transaction.. try to set it to off.

I dont know about yours, but my audigy1 had issues until i turned it off (comp freezing, blue screens especially during video playback)

so you changed out two pieces of hardware, a video card and a soundcard, did you clean out the residue of the old devices? have you tried formatting and reinstalling windows yet?

All residue cleaned out when changing hardware & drivers. Also on reinstallation. i have not yet formatted or reinstalled OS though. Can this really be neccessary when "just" upgrading from same brands?

Problem was solved by going back to the 85.98 driver. Obviously there's some issues with the 91.+ drivers from Nvidia on some pc's/cards.

Hopefullly Nvidia addresses this problem on later releases.

Thanks for all the tips.
