Default Random freezes, CPU Usage always at 100%??? Plz help. - 08-06-2006, 02:10 | posts: 871

Hello fellow guru's. I have another problem and I need your advice.

I keep getting random freezes then it becomes normal, and my CPU Usage always stays at 100%, it never goes down, even after I close some programs that were running it still stays at 100?

I think it's spyware, and I can't find one single program that is good. Each program is telling me thing's that the other program didn't list. I get over 1500inflections with ewido, and with Ad-Aware I get 0. I just don't understand.

Plz help me. I hate the random freezes.

Thx in advance.

Open your Task Manager, and look into the 'Processes' tab.. From there you can tell which process is using up your CPU, write that process name here.
BTW, there is probably two things which could cause this :
1. Spyware/Viruses.
2. Driver conflict.

ok, get rid of that thing something is probably conflicting with it and that's why it uses so much CPU usage all the time

I'd recommend you to use two things :
1. Windows Defender Beta2 - it will block windows holes and monitor for any possible threats in real-time.
2. XoftSpy - Windows Defender is really good for real-time protection, but there will be nothing more reliable and better then this thing to scan your system

With those two and some good Anti-Virus + Firewall you should really feel yourself secure

Okay. I took out Spyware Doctor and that fixed the 100% CPU Usage. But I still got a problem choosing a antispyware/adware program.

Anyways,

Here's the antispyware/adware programs that i'm currently using.
> Windows Defender
> Mcafee Anti-Virus and Firewall
> Spyware Blaster
> Hitman Pro
> Ad-Aware SE Pro
> Router Firewall
> XoftSpy SE

Do yall think I should uninstall some of the programs above, like Spyware Blaster, because it doesn't help.

Also I got 2 firewall and that is doesn't even help!!! Everything still gets through!!!

Thx for your suggestions!

Firewalls can block incoming connections. But IE security flaws are a completely different matter because they enter through the common port 80 which is unblocked or else you wouldn´t be able to browse the web. The solution is either to get a really good antispyware program or else switch to another browser like Firefox.

And hey, with all that list, congratulations on bloating your Pentium D!!!. People used to handle their resources more carefully back in the 386/486 era...

42 ain't that bad. I remember when I turned on my laptop for the first time... I had about 88. Took me a couple of hours to get rid of spyware/trial software/ and internet s**t. Now I have 30 at startup, though I'm gonna reformat my HD and reinstall WinXP.

Reinstalling Windows isn't going to help....well, at first, but then it will clog back up again if you don't take the time now to learn what you have running and why.

Most of those processes I see are nothing but update managers from programs like Quicktime. You've got quite a list....you'll need to check into your msconfig settings and get to know what programs you have there. Otherwise, you're going to reinstall those apps and have them running again in the background.

Quickest way to see what you have running, and I literally mean YOU, is to follow that list in the processes under UserName. Those with your name on it are the ones you installed.

Well, I did a reinstall of windows, and so far the PC runs way better. And I'm never going back to IE again. I'm using Firefox now.

Now I only have a average of 30 processes.

Also I need to install some anti-spyware/adware programs, and I'm not sure which is the right one to use, so I need your advice.

Thx again!

Lately I´ve seen many sites saying things like this link, so I don´t trust ´em. Basically svchost.exe is, like its name implies, a "service host". Many Windows services are launched through this program, and for every service that uses it, you´ll see a process with this name running in memory.

If you look into the services´ properties, you´ll see a line like this "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs". There are many guides out there that can help you decide which services to disable and which to keep. I´ve disabled some on my machine so when it loads it has 19 running processes.

. Automatic Updates
. Print Spooler (I don´t have a printer)
. Security Center
. Windows Firewall
. Messenger
. NVIDIA Display Driver Service
. Portfolio
