From the previews of what I've seen, this is supposed to blow the earlier versions out of the water.

I've been playing with it last night, and it's extremely nice, very well done.

yeah, it's excellent. I've been using since alpha 4, and it really is awesome, fantastic features straight out the box. Proving debian is the best. The new version is what i'm excited about: edgy eft. It's gunna have all the bleeding edge bling that i've been waiting for, including XGL.

Go ubuntu!

I have a little question.. which one's better? Ubuntu or Kubuntu? I downloaded some time ago Kubuntu 5.10 (KDE, every other linux release I tried was KDE based)... AFAIK Ubuntu's based off Gnome... which I've never tried a release using it.

XGL? The cool GUI? I'm giving it a try now...

Which one should I download? I can leave my rig downloading tonight while I sleep.

Thanks...

XGL + Compiz is the cool GUI, there will be a guide on Ubuntuforums.org somewhere telling you how to set up.

I recommend straight Ubuntu, since gnome is the primarily supported window manager. The great thing about ubuntu (and linux generally), is you can download other window managers like KDE and just select it on login. So it's not really a matter of choosing one or the other, since you can have both.

Good luck, Ubuntu has flattened the learning curve of linux IMO, it's not that daunting anymore

Thanks, Finch,
Will be awaiting the "help topix" when available.
Just Dnld'd both versions: (x32, x64) and will search for guides to instruct me as what I need for my system.
I will install it on a seperate HDD (40GB) and let Acronis OSS give me choice to boot WinXP or Ubuntu.

Ok, just booted into the LiveCD, and typing this on it now.
It's not recognizing any drives, other than my C:\ Windows.
Everything I have is NTFS, including C:\
Do I have to have any DATA partions all in FAT32? not NTFS? for Ubuntu to "see" them?
I have over 200GB of "stuff" on NTFS, and I can't re-do all that just for Linux.

Type 'df -h'

Find your partition and mount it.

Otherwise, try clicking on "System" > Administration > Disks

Might give you more info.

Type "cat /proc/partitions" in command line. Some distros dont have the /proc/ info but it can be very helpful at times. It will list all the different partitions it finds. Then you can mount them manually with "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1" or something like that.

If your computer doesnt see your partitions then it probably isnt able to read them from your ide/sata controller try plugging the hdds in a different port. It should be able to see any hdd no matter what file system is on it if it can access your built in controller.

Also a note I would not recommend enabling write to NTFS because it doesnt work (even though they say it does) I did it once and I corrupted my drives. So if you want to see your drives it will only be in read only mode. Side note: FAT32 read and write works perfectly.
