RivaTuner vs EVGA 7900GT (or: I'm too stupid for RivaTuner) -
05-31-2006, 19:23
Hi there,
maybe this question has already been asked, if so: I'm sorry, but I couldn't find anything helpful.
I sent back a XFX 7800GT, because I couldn't control the fan speed and yesterday I got my EVGA 7900GT.
I installed the newest RivaTuner and the Driver from EVGA (84.56) and tried to slow down the fan, but nothing happened.
What am I doing wrong? I thought, RivaTuner wasn't difficult to handle, but it seems it is...
Please help me!
thanks, Mantis

Different cards have different fan controllers - so there is no warranty that RivaTuner will be able to control all the fan controllers out there.
Have you thought about contacting EVGA and asking for a utility for that? Maybe they can help? :/

Well, on the forums of EVGA I've read, that their cards are controllable, so I thought all cards of them would be.
Anyway, I'll contact them.
By the way: I just saw a small difference between the 7800GT and 7900GT when trying to slow the fan down:
RivaTuner (15.8) showed me that the fan would run at 25% (7800GT), though it didn't, while RivaTuner (16) always shows me 100% with my 7900GT, just as it is. Is this something interesting?

my controller works and if you use the 84.56 drivers the fan speed stays at 25% in idle 100% of the time.

7900 Fan Control -

I use RT 16 with my EVGA 7900gt CO SC. RT definitely controls the fan speed per the routine I set using Boogieman's directions in his guide.
HOWEVER - RT 16 is not yet cpable of displaying the "fan duty cycle" for G71 chips, per Unwinder, the author of RIvatuner.
So you won't see fan duty cycle changes even though the fan's % of power is changing, and you can hear the fan speed change as the core temperature hits assigned threshold levels. Using Boogieman's guide, you can set up the fan speed to change as the core hits certain temperature ranges -- but RT 16 will still show the fan at 100%. Conclusion: RT 16 works to control the fan speed, but the hardware monitoring features simply can't show the changes in fan duty cycle [until thenext version of RT comes out].
This is the state of things for my EVGA 7900gt CO SC. Good luck with your card.

Do you mean this guide: http://userweb.suscom.net/~msl/RivaTuner.htm
As far as I understood, this is for controlling fan speed depending on the core temperature, which isn't my aim (at least not yet^^)

Okay, but I think I should hear a difference. I tried stopping the fan via RivaTuner by setting the MinFanSpeedLimit to "0", so that I really could hear and see, what is happening, but nothing has happened.
I've just tried out the newest driver (91.28) but the only change was, that RivaTuner now can't identify this driver (not really suprising)
@jrcallan: What BIOS does you card have and do you think, this could be responsible for the non-working fan-control?

RT fan control? 7900gt CO SC -

I have the original BIOS I received with the card when I stepped up --14.04. My serial number is "401."
And yes, I use RT to change fan speed as the core hits various temp levels:
55% when the temp reaches 57c;
75% when the temp hits 65c; and
100% if the temp reaches 72c.
Works great. I can hear the fan changes as I see the core temp graph hit the prescribed levels. Even though the fan duty cycle graph is locked at "100%" all the time.
Hope you get it to work to your purposes.

I've contacted EVGA just before the weekend, but I haven't got an answer yet

Where can I see the BIOS. The only I-think-BIOS is displayed as 5.71.22.12.03. Did you only mention the relevant numbers (which?) or do you have a completly different BIOS?
thanks again

Thepretically - yes. PWM controller is integrated in GPU, so amount of available controllers is equal to amount of chips. Practically - I've not seen GX2 myself and don't know how did they implemented fan control on the card. Probably both of PWMs are used, probably only one of them, probably neither of them and external PWM controller is used.
