I can't take it anymore... WinME is driving me nuts (98SE wasn't much better). Should I go out and buy 2K or wait for WinXP..? What do you think guys?

Go for Win2K straight up. ME is a waste of time and money, 98SE is good for games but not the most stable OS in the world. Win2K is a rock solid OS that will play all your games (despite the incompatbility fears cause its built with NT). I love Win2K and will not switch for anything, and I love games and buying new hardware all the time. XP is just gonna be a bunch of bells and whistles, try to combine Win2K and ME, well since ME sucks why would you want to combine it with something that totally kicks ass? Windows 2000, its what i use, it performs differently with 3d benchmarking and such, like 3d mark 2000 and 2001 give off bad readings.

Thanks guys......that does help me some. I own 1 copy of win3.1, 2 copies of Win95, four copies of win98, and one copy of WinME (most from previous computers I have purchased in the past). Microsoft has really soaked me good. The idea of Microsoft forcing to me register online everytime I install their new OS makes my jugular veins distend.

I ran out last fall and was one of the first morons in line at Best Buy to get WinMe (only $49, that should have been my first clue)... Between the constant "msgsrv32 not responding" and other cntl-alt-del inducing botchups I am at my wits end.

Looks like a trip to Staples to get Win2k... Gracias.
Uh dude, you don't have to register your OS online. And you can still download all your updates just as normal. Though you might like to know that

Hmm, interesting article, but I have yet to experience any problems. I purchased one copy and installed it on my machine, my two roomates machines, and my gateway computer. All the PC's can update with no problems so far. Plus I'm not sure if it helps but I'm fairly careful, about using bull**** names and companies all the time. I don't think there is one place on my computer where it actually says my real name. I rarely purchase anything online and when I do, obviously I have to give some legit info, so I just do it at work.

you guys are just saying that cuz you never used winXP before! I'm using beta 2 right now...it's much better than professional...sure it has more bells and whistles and more fixed compatibility issues, like in windows 2k pro, i couldn't install things that used install shield!! and like 70% of the installation programs use install shield...my SiSoftSandra also shows that i have a 9% speed increase im my memory transfer speed...on win98SE my memory transfered 468MB/sec while in winXP mine transfered a whopping 511MB/sec

Your on crack! Win me can be a very stable operating system. I have a dual boot system with Win2k and there are a lot of games I cannot get to work on Win2k. I have been running Win Me for 7 months without any problems.

I'm on a crack? Gimme a break ME is about as stable as crusty old horse with a broken leg. And what games do you have a problem with. I have network at my place with 2 roomates we all run Win2K and my friend brought his ME machine over to jack into our network so he could play Conter Strike with us. We had to stop every half hour as he kept havin the Blue Screen of Death. After that night he said f*ck it I gave him a copy of Win2K and he wiped his ass with ME. End of that story.

LMAO, but seriously the one game I would give anything to load on win2k is Unreal. I just love that game. If you have any ideas i'm willing to try them. Sorry to here about your friends bad experence with Win Me. I have heard other horror stories about it but I got to tell you it is, at least in my case, much better than win 98se.

Well I've got a perspective on all this OS stuff. I've used all the current OS's including XP and I've learned one thing, they can all be extremely stable operting systems. Under WIN2K I've had problems with some games, but it IS very stable and I recommend it to my business customers and home customers that don't have gaming as their primary objective. Although 2K is based on NT, I'd pick it in a heart beat merely because of the USB, and better PNP support. I've really not recommended ME to anyone because there are too many hardware incompatibilities at this point, althogh it is making nice progress. My daughters computer runs it and has for 4-5 months and it's been flawless...then again, she doesn't play many games. I still recommend 98SE to people that want to use the widest variety of hardware and games available. YES it locks up occasionally, but that's far better then spending money on stuff you can't use, not to mention chasing a solution that may not exist (ala WIN2K/ME).

Again, I really try to match the OS to the user. I know I'll find a few scuds coming my way, that's OK. I do know that on the rare occasion I provide someone the wrong OS, there's no end of problems. FYI...I use a dual boot of NT4 workstation and 98SE on my main system at home that takes care of all of my business stuff (NT) and all games (98). I may be moving to 2K from NT, but I still don't want ANY problems on the business end and NT is just like a rock...slow and stable! But more importantly, it just works.

I've been working with XP for a while now and i think it's a load of ****...
Running it on a 750 with 256 ram and it runs slow as hell

Also why am i going to spend $300 on each computer I own...

I've also been working on a way to avoid the 14 day trial lockout (for systems that aren't going on the net)

So far I have had no success had Ideas and want to know if any1 has tried them such as:

1. changing the date in windows, clicking apply and not ok. SHUT OFF THE COMP
then during the reboot change the date in cmos
this should solve the installation date problem (maybe not) you would have to do this every 13 days and who the hell wants to

2. if any1 knows how to decypher the installation date in the registry i'm all ears because that would work without question but i don't know how the hell to decode it it's not in hex because there are too many letters

If win2k is adopting this security feature you are going to have alot less windows operators

Let me know what u think.
