we are trying to create a home network over here at my house. our problem is this: we have to go 50 ft+ through walls and floors and through our basement. we want to put in a few wall ethernet jacks to make it look nice and neat. buuuuuuuuut...... i have no idea where to get those wall jacks.

and the problem with the cable. i haven't a clue what kind of cable to get. i would like a 100mb/sec network, but i don't know if i'm limited to 10mb/sec. i plan on hooking all this up to a linksys hub and to my dsl connection. what type of cable can i use, and where can i get it? this is buggin' the heck out of me. please point me to specific products.

thank you so much!

and hilbert is god!

Woh there buddy.

Loads of questions all easy, but bear with me.

1. Cable required - you can get cat 5 cable (electrical catalogue) in Uk www.rswww.com or www.farnell.com etc etc. It isn't the iso standard but hey, 50 ft - 100ft it works fine. Cheap too. Its an 8 core twisted pair cable, sometimes screened.

2. Bandwidth limit will be your hub and/or network cards, not the cable (if you do it right anyway!)

3. Wall jacks will also be from a electrical catalogue. Some shops sell this kind of stuff, but they are generally private owned, so check the yellow pages.

Once you have checked out the material in the places i have suggested then i will get some pics to show you how to cable it up. All the materials will be in the network areas.
screened / shielded cable is advisable if you have power lines or mains that might be next to the cat 5 cable at any point. Heat and general weather will affect unscreened cable too.

It doesn't really matter how you wire every thing up as long as it is the same at both ends ! With wall jacks being the exact opposite config compared to the rj45 plugs.

Its easiest if you can borrow a crimp tool. But you can do the same with a flat screwdriver !

pin-side / non-clip-side

or strip - or - grn strip - blue - blue strip - grn - brn strip - brown

just reverse for wall socket.

p.s. did you see that stuff on the sites i recommended ?

yeah. actually, i went out to radioshack this afternoon and bough a hundred foot roll of the stuff, and we did this:

start in the attic, and pull the cat5 cable down to the basement. then we had to go through this tiny tiny hole and get to the other computer. this all took awhile because there are many phone wires already pulled up from the basement and it's really a tight fit.

it really doesn't seem like much, but it was really about 100 degrees in the attic. yuck.

we had to do this because we can't afford wireless and also because it's faster this way too (100mb/sec).

our house is really old, so it was really hard to pull it through some of the cracks in the floors. that's why it has to loop all of the way around up to the attic and loop back down.

yes! i did look at that stuff, ee92as! only problem is i live in the US and i wanted to try to get this wire today and do it today. so i did! and it worked. i'll get the other stuff like the wall plates and that at radio shack too. and my dad's gonna borrow a crimper from his work! thank you for all of the help! i really do appreciate it!
