Greetings. I've been trying to set up my IPX protocols on my two systems, but cannot get any games to work (the games can't see each other) over the network, though file transferring is running fine... I've tried configuring my IPX/SPX protocols in every way possible, and still nothing. Computer A is a Compaq Presario, with an AMD Athlon 500, 128megs ram, DVD-drive, Voodoo3 16-bit, two Ethernet cards (one's a Diamond, the other is a D-Link, which is the one connected to the hub), and is running Windows98se. Computer B is a Compaq Presario, with an AMD Duron 750, 64megs ram, CD-RW drive, TNT2 video card, and two Ethernet cards (both D-Link), which is running WindowsME. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You might also try installing NetBEUI and NETBIOS support for IPX/SPX<br>
<br>
Eh, you gotta 'Add...' from the 'Protocol' menu in your Network Neighborhood. I think... <IMG SRC="smileys/cool.gif"> <br>

I have already tried those protocols, to no avail. As for games, I'm trying to get StarCraft to work, which requires IPX to run over a LAN, and get the same problem with Half-Life (I can't see games hosted on the other computer). But I have a few more things to try.

Try this... uninstall ALL the network drivers and then reinstall. Do tcp/ip first (i know you don't need it). Then do IPX/SPX then the netBIOS helpers for IPX and see if that works. I know it's strange but I've done it before and it's worked for me in the past.<br>

Hmm, that didn't work... I must say that one of the computers is extremely unstable, and on the WindowME computer I get a message saying that the server was "unable to validate my password" when I log on... I'm still able to access my files over the LAN, so should these things effect it?

Ok i don't know why you have 2 nic in each PC. In win98 an ME thats normally a problem. The only network protocols that you need for any game today are TCP/IP and IPX/SPX. Netbeui is almost dead.

Hey has anyone figured out the problem here, cos i have the same problem with fifa 2000 and my two computers. No matter what I do, my brothers computer can enter the ipx network area of the game, but my computer (host) cannot enter the area, its blocked.

Have you got any kind of firewall running ?<br>
<br>
If you are running two different OS's that sometimes brings up a few un-answered problems !<br>
<br>
Just up date your OS, this usually deals with some networking issues.<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
p.s. oh yeah. Some games reconise if two identical copies of the game are being used and reject connecting with that computer !<br><br><i>This message was edited by ee92as on 08 Sep 2001 01:41 AM</i>

Well, sometimes problems are soloved through the most simplest solutions.<br>
Here's what I think's messed up.<br>
You said you got some 'password validation' error when logging in on one of the boxes?<br>
That's where the problems is. You've got to 'login' on both the boxes, i.e., use a username and a password that's working. Just clicking 'cancel' when that Window's login thing appears won't cut it.<br>
<br>
So, make sure that both your computers are 'logged in' and try again.<br>

Hehe, yeah sorry i did read the replys but havent had time to reply because of uni commitments. First i read about that password incorrect stuff the other guy had, and i dont have that, anyway the two computers are connected by a cross-over cable, we are both running win98se, but i dont know whose is more updated from the net, so thanx ill check that out. And another thing yeah fifa is a cracked version so maybe thats where my problem lies but i cant see it being it though. But anythings worth a try, so if there are any other sugegstions ill take them too, thanx.

I just wanted to add some information to my problem i have, and that is when i go to dxdiag, and go to network tab, i then go to test directplay, and start and ipx connection test, while i get the following error "There was an error initializing a connection using the service provider that you specified. This may have happened because the computer did not have the necessary hardware and/or network protocols installed" "DirectPlay Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Initializing Connection): HRESULT = 0x887700fa (Not available)"<br>
<br>
While my brother's computer is able to run a test ipx session, and by the way i have setup everything the same in terms of the ipx protocols on both computers and we even have the same cards.

Try removeing the ipx/spx protocol then the tcp/ip and netbuei. (if applicable).<br>
<br>
Then install TCP/IP then ipx. Leave out netbuei if over 10Mbit. (sometimes you need netbuei over 10Mbit for no apparent reason !)<br>
<br>
Just reinstalling can sometimes solve everything !

Thanks for the tip, ok here is what happens, i remove the IPX protocol and restart the PC, then i re-install the IPX protocol, keeping the IPX also binded to the dial up adapter and restartthe PC again, then I remove the IPX binded to the dial-up adapter and then without restarting the PC, I can play IPX, but then after I restart the computer to save the changes it doesnt work again.Hmmmmmmm , this IPX is pretty confusing to me.<br>
Help!!!!<br>

Personally i prefer TCP/IP for gameing. Its easier to control compared to IPX.<br>
<br>
Is the ipx binded to your network card and your dial up ? Does it work binded to both ?

Nope thats the weird part about it, when i start the PC, and its binded to both it doesnt work, then i remove the binded dial up, and it does work, only until i restart the computer, after i restart it, there is only the one ipx protocol (the actual network: Intel 21140 based 10/100 Ethernet Controller) and ipx doesnt work again.So in other words, the only time it works is after i remove the dialup binding and click no to restarting my PC

I may have the solution...<br>
<br>
I take it there is no IPX/Spx server on the network, i.e. setup as a peer to peer LAN.<br>
<br>
IPX can get frustrated when there is no server (for Novell) so some automatic settings dont work.<br>
<br>
So, in the advanced properties tab of the IPX protocol, change the frame type to 802.3 and set the network address (should be further down the list) to 10, on all PC's.<br>
<br>
Let me know...
