Geometry Instancing is where the card is able to render an object once and then utilize special code to use that object again in the scene instead of fully processing it again. It is intended to give you a performance boost, which you may only notice in situation where for example there is a lot of realistic plant life to render.

Problem is that this makes pic-quality quite a much worse than w/out this.

    Actually no...no it doesn't.

Geometry Instancing enables all identical supported objects (such as trees in Far Cry) to be constantly rendered in their full 3d-state, as opposed to becoming 2d sprites at a certain distance. This is acheived when a model is rendered just once, than stored in video memory for quick access, effectively freeing up cycles for rendering other more important things.

This also works for grass and such, so rather than have 2d planes of grass all around you, you can effectively have full 3d grass regardless of distance and next to no cost in performance over having standard 2d sprites.

This not only maintains performance, but improves image quality...considering you can now see properly rendered trees regardless of distance in games like Far Cry. It's sort of like Speedtree in Oblivion (though a little more detailed when it comes to far-off stuff).

Hope that clears it up ;)

Don't know, but i can see when i enable g.instancing that AA/AF doesn't work as effectily and there are lotsa more jaggies etc. than without g.instancing.

And that happens specially in driving games; GTR/GTR/rFactor/F1C/etc.
