Hi guys,
I was wondering, since i am going to upgrade my Celeron 500 to a 700, would it work? The HP tech guy said i could only upgrade to a 700, and the only ones i can find are FCPGA. Now, since my 500 currently installed is a PPGA, would it still work? Or would i need a slot 1 converter?

Thanks!
PPGA and FCPGA are both socket-370. FCPGA is just the Coppermine. SECC and SECC2 are slot-1. All Celerons above 533 (and the 533A) are Coppermines, and thus FCPGA. THe only problem you may have is if you motherboard can supply the proper voltage. If it can supply the proper voltage, you can put any Celeron you want in there up to 766 (multipliers are locked, so it doesn't matter if it supports the multiplier or not). Above that, and they are 100 bus, so your board might not be able to do that. Do you know any of the specs of your machine? If not, try downloading a utility like SiSoft Sandra, and find out what chipset you have. You might also check for BIOS revisions to allow you to take a better processor.

I have SiSoft Sandra, but dont know where to look for my power supply. I'm sure that it could handle it, I told the tech support guy what model i had, and he said it'd support up to 700. I just wanted to know if i had to do anything else to it. I've never put in a new CPU, is it hard? I know i'd need some thermal compound and stuff, but is it basically plug and play? My chipset is a Intel i810, and thats all i know really.
Yeah, the FCPGA Celeron should just drop right in. Should be a pretty easy install. You could even use the newer 100 bus ones (800/850/900), or a Pentium3 (I wouldn't recommend spending the extra money for a 133 bus p3, though, as the i810 will still keep the ram at 100MHz). Get a retail one, so you'll have the fan already for it. It's a pretty easy installation. There's usually a lever that you pull out and up on to release the old processor (after you've removed the old clip and fan), and then you just drop in the new one (the pins should only line up one direction), and push down the lever.

Ok, thanks Pitydafoo, I'll probabily be getting my processor when i get back from New Jersey in two weeks. Would a P3 700 Be that much faster than a Celeron 700?
Thanks

Yes, especially in gaming. The P3 has a 256-bit bus between its 256k cache, and the Celeron on has a 64-bit bus on its 128k. Also the P3 has a greater number of pipelines to the cache. Also the front-side bus will be 100MHz instead of 66MHz. You'll see quite a bit more speed with the P3.
