Laptops & Notebooks They’re completely portable, and they use less power and make less noise than desktop models. But what if you have questions ?

Pin Mod - worked a treat ! -

*moderator's note, do this at your own risk!*
Thought I would share these with all you guys. I just bought one of these Dell Inspiron 1300's. £299, Pentium M Celeron 1.5ghz (1mb cache). Not a bad laptop really, wont be used for gaming, just day to day stuff and CBT's. Tried to find some software to overclock it with, but Dell mobos are custom made and no software could find the chipset, although it reports as a 915 chipset.
Anyway, thought I would try the pin mod in these links: -
http://www2.ijib.com:1337/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3
http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources...p?id=35&page=1
Really clear informative guides on how to do it. Took me less thank 5 minutes to do. The Celeron is now running at 1.995ghz and with SuperPI tests, it is faster. Load up times are quicker. Temps are 52 degrees under LOAD with some AS5 thermal paste. Super PI 32m stable, will run PRIME later aswell)
I have a 1.6ghz Pentium M (2mb cache) coming tomorrow, which with this pin mod will run @ 2.13ghz, I cant wait !!!
Free mhz's ! Cheers Intel !!! What a result for the consumer.
Oh, forgot to say...when I used SiSoft Sandra on the Celeron M before the PIN mod, it said the processor ID was a Pentium M Dothan 2.13mhz (2mb cache) Appears the Celeron M chips are speed binned with some cache disabled.

Most laptops have stickers in strategic places so they can tell if youve opened it up and changed any componetns. The Dell is so simple. You open one cover on the underside and the processor is there. No way they could tell I'd ever changed it. If the processor goes BANG, I shall just remove the wire and return it !!! LOL Oh, I forgot to say, its a fiddly procedure. When I first tried the mod, I dropped the wire in the wrong holes ! Very easy to remove it though with tweazers...
I do use NHC v1.9 BETA3. Its great software. We use it on all the notebooks in our house. I personally think its the best monitoring software for laptops. My only criticism is that you cannot control the fan speed...

I tried this with a 855 Chipset, unfortently, It went wrong (I thought it was a 915 honest) and now have a dead laptop.
I'm never touching an Overclock on a laptop ever again!

Uhm, don't do this mod unless you:
a. Know what you're doing (at least run cpu-z to check chipset)
b. Can afford to buy a new cpu or even a new laptop
Thats not to say this isn't realy, really, cool, but this has the same risks as desktop hardware modification.

I just did the PIN mod on my Dell Inspiron 1300. Below are links of the Sisoft Sandra before and after test results.

I am really glad this worked. This plus putting 2gb mem into my laptop will really enhance its usefullness. Its especially good since I got the laptop as my main computer now. It also has the Laptop USB dock that gave it an extra display ( so 2 external monitors plus the built-in LCD if I wanna have 3 displays ).
Thanks to the OP for the link!

Hi guys, I recently tried to overclock my Dell Inspiron 6000 1.6ghz (400mhz fsb) Pentium M Dothan, and to say the least had some technical difficulties. After putting the pin in, and re-assembling the laptop, I tried to boot up. For about 5 seconds the laptop appeared to be booting as normal (no video however), with lights and some "spinning" sounds. But after about 5 seconds the laptop shut down with a small "beep" type of sound. I tried to boot again, but the same thing happened. I then proceeded to take the pin out, re-assemble the laptop, and try and re-boot, and the same thing happened once again. Anyone know what could be wrong? I was under the impression that if the pin-mod didn't work, I would simply have to remove the pin, and all would work as normal again. But now I have a somewhat "dead" laptop, and need some help. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

After 1 year of owning this laptop I decided to try this pin mod today.
At first I accidentally placed a wire in 16-17 and was like WTF it won't turn on.
I then placed the wire in 15-16 as it should be but it still wouldn't turn on.
It turns out you have to turn the screw in the socket all the way clockwise otherwise it won't boot.
Also, does anyone know what cpus will fit this socket?
