Oops, I did not notice that you needed a driver for Windows 98 before now..!

Ok then, here is the last Win95/98/Me ForceWare driver, 81.98,
modded so it will install with ALL cards from GeForce 2 up to - and including - GeForce 7:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y6CQH0O2

If you want to update your driver through Device Manager,
the installation file is called NVAGP.INF (and not nv4_disp.inf as it's usually)

But it will be easier to just uninstall the old driver
reboot
stop and cancel the "New Hardware found" Wizard
ignore the "Device not working properly"
-and then just run the 81.98_forceware_win9x_english_for_all_cards_up_to_ G7x.exe

It will automatically extract its content to
C:\NVIDIA\81.98_forceware_win9x_english\
and then start the installation through the file
C:\NVIDIA\81.98_forceware_win9x_english\setup.exe

the link posted here for the 9x/me driver is broken. Do you have an alternate one?

clokkevi - thanks for the win-98 mod'd driver. Question:

I've got this off-brand PCI-Express video card (XFX on the box) GeForce 6200LE.

OEM: Vender Pine Technology Ltd
PnpID: VEN_10DE&DEV_0163&SUBSYS_215E1682&REV_A1
OEM Device from Pine Technology Ltd

This is a PCI-Express board that I've installed on an Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA motherboard (Via PT880 Pro/Ultra northbridge). I'm not 100% positive that the PCI-E bus slot is fully recognized by win-98, but assuming that it is - would the mod'd win-98 driver that you posted work on this PCI-E board?

Hey, 98 guy, the link above works for you? 'Cause I get a message saying the file is no longer available.

The link works ok for me:

It opens a page that asks you to type in a 3 letter code to access the file.

Then it starts a countdown (45 seconds) and then gives you a "download now" button. Here is the resulting URL:

http://www65.megaupload.com/files/6a..._up_to_G7x.exe

If you try that, it should work, unless it's a timed URL.

I use IE6 with Java 5.9 or 6.0. Maybe the site uses Java?

I guess you already know this by now, but anyway..:

Yes, I pasted also

DEV_0163 = "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE"

into the NVAGP.INF file, so the driver should work 100% with your card!

The ForceWare drivers you can download from Nvidia has support for every GeForce card from GeForce 2 to GeForce 8. But not GeForce Go 6400.
I believe this is because that card is not possible to buy separate.
Therefore, the only people who have that card, are the people with Sony VAIO notebooks.
And so those people are meant to download their drivers from Sony at http://www.vaio-link.com

You did not tell which VAIO model you have, but a quick search shows that
GeForce Go 6400 is inside many of the Sony VAIO VGN-S5... notebooks.
So I found and downloaded the
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Vaio/Original/S5_Video.zip

This is a ForceWare 77.42 driver, and its "nv4_disp.inf" file (which btw is instead called "NVSZ.INF" here) shows the correct PCI Device IDs.
It shows that there are two different GeForce Go 6200's and two different GeForce Go 6400's used in VAIO VGN-S5... notebooks.

Both the GeForce Go 6200's have PCI Device ID = DEV_0167 while
both the GeForce Go 6400's have PCI Device ID = DEV_0168

To be able to differentiate them, they have used the extra "SUBSYS" attribute:

GeForce Go 6200's:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167&SUBSYS_81C2104D
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167&SUBSYS_81C9104D

GeForce Go 6400's:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168&SUBSYS_81EA104D
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168&SUBSYS_81EB104D

These are the IDs you should paste into the [NVIDIA.Mfg] section.

Here is what it looks like in the S5_Video.zip's "NVSZ.INF":

Code:
[NVIDIA.Mfg]
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.2% = nv4_DisableInst2Sys,     PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167&SUBSYS_81C2104D
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.3% = nv4_A_DisableInst2Sys,   PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167&SUBSYS_81C9104D
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.4% = nv4_DisableInst2Sys_OD5, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168&SUBSYS_81EA104D
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.5% = nv4_A_DisableInst2Sys,   PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168&SUBSYS_81EB104D
and

Code:
[Strings]
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.2 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 "
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.3 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200  "
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.4 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400   "
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.5 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400    "
The "nv4_DisableInst2Sys" / "nv4_A_DisableInst2Sys" / "nv4_DisableInst2Sys_OD5" attributes
are used to point the installer to the respective sections in the "NVSZ.INF" file.

You will have to find out what card you have (see the BTW2 at the end of this post!)
- if you have the SUBSYS_81EA104D card you should use the "nv4_DisableInst2Sys_OD5" sections,
- if you have the SUBSYS_81EB104D card you should use the "nv4_A_DisableInst2Sys" sections.

Then you have to compare those section with the
"nv4_mobile" / "nv4_NV3x" / "nv4_WSApps_NV3x" / "nv4_WSApps_NV3x_DOEB" etc etc sections
which are used in the original ForceWare drivers,
so you can get the correct set of files / settings.

Good luck!

BTW1: if you just want a "quick fix" you can just use

Code:
[NVIDIA.Mfg]
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.2% = nv4_mobile,     PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167&SUBSYS_81C2104D
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.3% = nv4_mobile,   PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167&SUBSYS_81C9104D
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.4% = nv4_mobile, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168&SUBSYS_81EA104D
%NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.5% = nv4_mobile,   PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168&SUBSYS_81EB104D
and

Code:
[Strings]
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.2 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 "
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0167.3 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200  "
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.4 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400   "
NVIDIA_NV44.DEV_0168.5 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400    "
in the "nv4_disp.inf" and do the rest as shown in Wolverine69r's posts first in this thread.
While you may miss a few special functions available in the VAIO,
it should at least work.

BTW2: If you want to know what SUBSYS your card have,
you may open Registry Editor with
Start -> Run...
and write "regedit"
and then search for "SUBSYS_81EA104D" and "SUBSYS_81EB104D"
You will only find one of those two - that one is the card you have.
And then you know what sections you need to use

Is your modded driver still located here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y6CQH0O2

Because when I download it and unpack it, all files are dated 12/10/2005 and there is no nv4_disp.inf file.

Unless the customized files are in the 2 cab files? (which I can't unpack - what's a good unpacker for those?)

I'm trying to get an Asus EN7300GT PCI-e card to run under win-98, but the computer hangs with a black screen just after the win-98 splash screen.

These are the last few lines of bootlog.txt:

LoadStart = DISPLAY.drv
LoadSuccess = DISPLAY.drv
LoadStart = NVARCH16.DLL
LoadSuccess = NVARCH16.DLL
InitDone = DISPLAY
Init = Display Resources

The XFX GeForce 6200LE (PCI-e) that I was working with previously at least worked in 640x480 mode, but it wouldn't let me change the resolution higher.

Yes!

It's called

81.98_forceware_win9x_english_for_all_cards_up_to_ G7x.exe

This is because the file is called NVAGP.INF in this driver
(I'm sorry, I posted earlier it was called nv4_disp.inf, I have edited that post now!)
- and it's dated 12/10/2005 because I edited it with a program which does not change the "Date Modified" value..!

No, the cab files just contain InstallShield files for helping with the installation
- corecomp.ini, ctor.dll, objectps.dll, iuser.dll, iscript.dll etc etc

Use i5comp or i6comp to extract data*.cab files.
Download and extract both i5comp.exe, i6comp.exe, ZD50149.DLL and ZD51145.DLL
to your C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder

To list / extract / replace files, you need both
data1.hdr, data1.cab and data2.cab
data1.hdr is the header file, data1.cab is the start-volume, and data2.cab is the main volume.

Then you open a Command Prompt, then cd to the correct folder

Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\clokkevi\

C:\Documents and Settings\clokkevi>cd c:\temp\81.98_forceware_win9x_english

C:\temp\81.98_forceware_win9x_english>
Then you may type just i6comp to see the help:

Code:
C:\temp\81.98_forceware_win9x_english>i6comp

Usage: i6comp <cmd> [-opts] <cab> [cab index|fmask|path] [disk fmask|path]
Commands
        l: list Files
        t: list Setup Types
        c: list Components
        g: list File Groups
        e: extract files (specify <cab index|mask> when specifying <disk path>)
        x: same as 'e' with subdirs
        r: replace files in cab (same syntax as 'e')
        d: delete files from cab (specify <cab index|mask>)
        a: add files to cab (<cab path> is optional; must specify -g OR -f)
Options
        r: extract subdirs/recurse and store subdirs
        d: include directories in cab matches
        g<name|index>: specifies File Group to work with
        o: suppress supplementary output (start msg, comments, etc.)
        f: treat File Groups as directories (usefull for GUI, wrappers)
           for Add, Delete and Replace only 1 File Groups may be used at a time

C:\temp\81.98_forceware_win9x_english>
So e.g. i6comp l data1.cab will show the content of both data1.cab and data2.cab

Code:
C:\temp\81.98_forceware_win9x_english>i6comp l data1.cab

Yes, it is working.

You do know that..
..you have to type in the 3 letters,
and then press the Download button
- and then wait for 45 seconds?

Also - if you have changed your file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

to block ad-ware sites etc, it will not work.
If so, just rename "HOSTS" to "HOSTx" temporarily.

If you have not changed your HOSTS file
- then it is something else on your PC that is blocking access to the ads.

I am not familiar with any of the ad-ware stopper tools,
so I am not sure what you should do.

I will just say - you have to see those ads.
If they are not visible, then the download will not start after waiting 45 seconds.

Then, after clicking on the "Download" button,
the counter will count down from 45 to 0:

When it gets to 0, you need to click the
"Click here to download" button:

And then finally, you will be able to save the
"81.98_forceware_win9x_english_for_all cards_upto_G7x.exe" file:

BTW: I had do the "Enter the 3 letters" thing
twice right now before it started the 45, 44, 43, .. 0 countdown.

@Arkus:

The Readme.txt is the original, unmodfied one.
That is why it has only a few cards in it.
The NVAGP.INF file is the only one I edited.

About your GeForce Go 6100
- none of the GeForce Go cards was inside the list of the 146 cards.

EDIT:

I now made an updated "version 2" of the driver
for forcing installation also on some GeForce Go cards:

Code:
DEV_0244  = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150"
DEV_0247  = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100"
DEV_01D6  = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200"
DEV_01D7  = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300"
DEV_01D8  = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400"
DEV_0398  = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600"

Since I do not have a GeForce Go card myself, I have no way of testing this.
If you can confirm that it installs and work 100%, please do!

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PFY7JN05

EDIT2:

Arkus told me that it installed, but the picture became bad when changing resolution.

I can try to decrease the number of possible reslotions to a minimum,
just the default 800 x 600 pixels, 16-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate,
and the "native" resolution of the notebook - e.g.
1280 x 800 pixels, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate, or maybe
1400 x 1050 pixels, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate

If that still does not work, I have no more ideas.

The problem is that I can not find any Windows 98/Me drivers for GeForce Go
No versions at all.
Probably it's because all notebooks with a GeForce Go card were produced long after Windows 2000/XP had become the default OS,
and so they never needed any Windows 98/Me drivers.

The GeForce Go drivers for Windows 2000/XP have specific settings
which the GeForce drivers for Windows 2000/XP does not have.
E.g. the GeForce Go 6100 drivers for Windows 2000/XP have these additional values added to the Windows Registry:

Code:
[C51_AddReg]
HKR,, AllowMaxPerf,    %REG_DWORD%, 0x302
HKR,, PerfLevelSrc,    %REG_DWORD%, 0x3333
HKR,, VarBusLinkWidth, %REG_DWORD%, 0

[SmartDimmer_AddReg]
HKR,, EnableBrightnessControl, %REG_DWORD%, 1
HKR,, PanelPWMFrequency,       %REG_DWORD%, 200
HKR,, PanelPWMDutyRange,       %REG_DWORD%, 0x03e8012c
Another problem is the differences between the Windows 2000/XP and the Windows 98/Me drivers..!
Both the files and the registry settings are very different.
So I can not easily "port" the settings from the GeForce Go drivers for Windows 2000/XP
into the
settings GeForce Go drivers for Windows 98/Me which I try to make..

This is because the Go cards use special drivers.
If you read post #63 in this thread
I write about the GeForce Go 6200 and Go 6400

Do you also have a Sony VAIO?

If you want, I can make a driver just for you, and send you a PM with the link.
I don't have Sony VAIO, I have MSI Megabook M670 and I would like to have driver for win98.

Thanks!

clokkevi, thanks for the head ups! It seems that none of the described methods worked for downloading the drivers from my country except the installation of megaupload tool bar. Anyway, I've downloaded them and installed successfully, thanks for the great job - 7900GS working great on Win98 SE. KUTGW and thank you again!

Hi all,

I have a brandnew Toshiba Satego 490 notebook with 2 GB ram and
Mobile Intel 945 PM Express chipset for Duo Centrino.

There I installed Win98SE.

I succeed to get full network (internet) after some days of hard work, meaning that PCI-E works in Win98SE even on an notebook. I also succeed to get full USB 2.0 support via the original ICH 7 Intel chipsetdriver.

But the Nvidia graficcard Geforce Go 7900 GS with 512 MB shows me only VGA 16 colors and 640x400...grrr. I can push the original Svga driver from Win98SE to show me 800x600 but only with 16 colours and no directx at all.

I tested the driver for Win98 SVGAII from VMware, the driver is accepted without any yellow questionmark in the device manager, but shows only the same VGA resolution as above.

I used the driver from clokkevi "version 2" 81.98_forceware_win9x_english,
and modified the NVAGP.INF with

[Mfg]
%NVIDIA_G71.DEV_0298.1% = NV30, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0298&SUBSYS_FF311179

[Strings]
NVIDIA_G71.DEV_0298.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS"

which is exact the name of the grafiKcard in that Satego notebook.
I know this from an XP SP2 installation on the same Satego.

I also installed the whole Intel chipset utility for ICH 7, that shows me the
PCI-X 16 slot for the graficcard as
Mobile Intel 945 PM Express PCI Express Root Port - 27A1

But using setup.exe from Nvidia, I always was told that none Nvidia chip is found. So I installed the driver manual, but without success.

Bootlog.txt shows me "minivdd failed to load".

I noticed, that NO dll s from Nvidia are listed in the driver info section of the device manager, only NVDISP.DRV and NVMINI.VXD . Why does this happen?

I think, that I am only a very small step away to make any Nvidia Geforce Go
cards work in Win98.
Because I believe that it isnt the fault of the PCI -X slot for the grafikcard,
perhaps only one setting in the NVAGP.INF for all Nvidia Geforce Go is wrong.

Please help
Dietmar

Good luck!
If / when you succeed, please post the driver here!

I myself had to give up on the Geforce Go - I have no card myself
and therefore no way of testing different settings in the NVAGP.INF file.

Hi all,

I succeed to start the Win98 driver from Nvidia 81.98 for my PCIx16 Geforce go 7900 GS.
The 77.72 drivers do not work.

But there is still only a resolution of 640x480 with 16 colours.
When I switch to 256 colours or to a[IMG] higher resolution, I see a flimmering monitor. So I think that some settings in the registry are wrong but which?

Nice to hear from you,

Dietmar
