Laptops & Notebooks They’re completely portable, and they use less power and make less noise than desktop models. But what if you have questions ?

Digging up an old thread here.
I'd like to know how good notebook coolers are as well. I've noticed that while gaming, my laptop CPU tops out at 58c. My laptop has a secondary fan that only turns on at 60c. I think it's passively cooled before the fan comes on. I think it's getting too hot at 58c.

They're pretty much a waste of money unless you have a really poorly designed notebook.

Most of the heat is passively released out the bottom, which is ok if I have it on a table. When I have it on my lap, it heats up a lot. Found a few Mac modding forums so I'll see if I can do anything.

No! They generally do NOT work. If your luck and your fans lign up, maybe.
I read a review on one, with it temps dropped 1-2 Degrees. The reviewer then stuck 4 beer bottle caps under each corner of the laptop, and temps went down 3-5 deg.
So, save yourself the money, and buy beer instead.

I have just ran down to the scrap yard and found a nice sheet of 1/8 " Aluminium ( 4 foot x 4 foot ) for 8 bucks. Came home and cut myself a nice plate out to kinda match the shape of my laptop Vaio fs742w and polished it up all nice and shiney and it works great. It might drop the temp down just a little but at least my legs don't get hot. and I still have a pretty big pice of Aluminium to play with.

My friend and I are tossing around the idea of making a cool box to sit our laptops on. We were thinking of putting a couple of fans in the back and using somekind of active cooling for the air to blow across, haven't hammered out the components yet..........we were hoping to have it run off of USB power(wishful thinking??)

Here is what I am using...
http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=75004
Seems to work for me. It was $30. Perhaps it is just a piece of mind thing, but I feel as though my laptop is that much closer to not ever overheating.

this is what Im using
http://store.4linkcomm.com/byalnoco.html
Keeps my HDD @ a steady 33*c, Without 40*c
Keeps My CPU @ 48-52*c, without 56-60*c
Blows cold air onto the bottom keeping the Memory/GPU/CPU/HDD all @ a nice "steady" Temp. It's also lightweight...made out of Aluminium.
Cost was around $20 bucks. IMHO, It works.
