Default 3D Mark 05 score, not good enough? - 01-08-2006, 22:12 | posts: 135

Hi
My rig is a P4 2.67ghz cpu, 1gig kingston ram, x850 xt pe graphics card and i score 5135 on 3dmark05 and was wondering if that was good for my system, as i was thinking of adding another gig of ram,
Is the CPu i have bottlenecking the system cause i play COD2 and Quake 4 all on highest quality availiable no problem its just i bought F.E.A.R and it lags alot this happend on quake 4 when i had 512 ram but upped it recently and it runs smooth as now?

thanks for any help

What? You run Quake IV without problems on ULTRA mode? I don't believe that for a second.

sorry forgot there was an ultra mode i run it on high with everything else on highest availiable
ive not long bought the x850 xt pe as i couldnt afford to buy a whole new rig just to have pci express so i thought this would last me untill 2007 at least untill directx 10 is out,
Was i wrong in buying a x850 xt pe this late (nov 05)?

No you weren't as the 850xtpe is a blazing fast card, but it is being bottlenecked by yoyur system.

To give you an idea, my x800GTO2 @ x850xtpe speeds is getting me 7000 3dmarks.

Ah, water cooling. Works wonders for OC's.

The 850 PE is a really good card, but you are being held back by your CPU. You could try spending some money on a cooler, maybe a Zalman 9500, and OC'ing it a bit.

thanks for the coments,
i was kind of expecting to here the cpu was the problem on 3dmark05 but im not really into benchmarking, more just playing games as high as possible which ive been able to do since i upped to 1 gig ram, then i bought fear and was stuck with lagging again will adding another 1 gig sort this out as i was thinking of investing for future games? and will my rig last me untill the end of the year at least?
does my cpu really make a difference in the games?

There are mixed feelings about 1 vs 2 bg of ram.

Most benchmarks only show a marginal improvement (2-3fps) when using 2 gb in games fear, bf2, d3/q4. Other games see no such improvement. It is why I have stuck with 1 GB for now.

its not really for Fps really more to fix the lagging as in quake 4 when i had 512 the lag and in game freezes when looking to a new part was unbearable so i upped to 1 gig ram and it sorted out, smooth as now
ive read guru3d's review of f.e.a.r and it recommends 2 gig for smooth gameplay

More RAM will not give you a higher 3dmark score... More ram will give you a smoother FEAR experience though because FEAR really like RAM... However, you have to be carefull with adding RAM.. you can't just toss in another module.
