Default problems with external monitor - 01-05-2006, 13:41 | posts: 3,054 | Location: Denmark

Hi there

I Have an IBM thikpad r50 with a radeon mobility 7500 graphicscard. Now i want to connect a samsung syncmaster 204Ts (1600 x 1200) to it via my docking bay. The problem is i cannot get the resolution above 1280 x 1024. Well i can, but then it kinda makes the desktop bigger that the screen, so i have to move the mouse to the corners to get it to move the desktop. Is there a fix for this? Ohh I use the DVI-connection.

Are you running the internal LCD at the same time as the external monitor? This would cause the resolution "extension" you mentioned.

Try just running the external monitor by itself and fiddling around with the output settings in Display Properties.

Also check the monitor adapter refresh rate in Display Properties->Settings->Advanced->Monitor. Try lowering it to something more standard such as 60 or 75Hz. I'm not sure what the limits are regarding DVI output (in terms of Radoen 7500 capabilities ), but a lower refresh rate should certainly relax the limits.

Many 'Mobility' gfx chipsets are limited in terms of resolution capabilities (especially 16:9 widescreen resolutions), so research/google the gfx chipset and determine what its actually capable of.

the thing is it works with the analog connector - we're gonna try a fresh windows/drives install monday and se if it fixes the problem.

most mobile gpus will not run any higher on a secondary screen than on the primary display (the notebook lcd). The only way to overcome this is to disable the primary lcd. You can do this at the driver level quite easily.
