Just wondering if its possible to record digitally from a sound blaster live card to a MD. All i know of is my MD has an optical cable and i dont' think that works with a sound card.

maybe if you could feed the soundcard and md player to a digital receiver. i'm pretty sure my pioneer vsx d608 could do that?
Yes. Creative sells a digital input/output daughter card ($20US) that will do the job nicely.
But not *optical* digital out. And to Ice, no, not wrong. We assume too much. LemonDude, do you already have a Live!? If you do, then the little I/O card is a good option. If not, then strive to get a Platinum, or a Game Theatre XP.
I am wrong on the price -> $59.99 retail. I had one not too long ago and it did cost $20. LiveDrive is a shocking $129.99!
Well i have two live cards, a new generation live! Value which has 5 jacks, including that 5th yellow digital out. Nope... that thing doesn't work, i went to surround mixer and clicked on 'digital out only'... MD still can't pick up any digital signals

Then i have the first generation Live! card which comes with that Digital I/O card (version 1)...

Ok, on my Digital I/O card, there are 5 thingies... one digital din, 2 midi, and the two s/p dif things.

OK... how about i take a pic and show you what this optical cable which came with my MD looks like
Just in case you can't make out what the jack looks like, its the typical 1/8 size, except only the tip (about 2mm) is metal, the rest is coated in plastic.

http://images.fairmarketnetwork.com.au/images/site514/members/468401-Optical.jpg

Man... think i'm just gonna sell this piece of crudness... Oh, just one more question, if i connect my cd-rom to soundcard via s/p dif cable but my speakers are connected through analog cables, will the sound quality still improve?

Um, yea. I replied to your post earlier about s/pdif with CD's and Live! (...a long story short: eh, maybe...). But to reiterate you need an *optical* input/output. Get a flashlight and shine it into one end of the optical cable; look at the other end. You should see light from the flashlight. S/PDIF is made from copper wires and optical cables are made from glass fibre (or maybe plastic, i dunno), and of course copper won't pass a single photon.

The Digital I/O '2' card specifically states that it supports optical fibre cables. That is the way to go. Also, SoundCardCentral (stealing my lines, too, dangit!) posted a review about the Zoltrix 'Nightengale' Sound Card which comes with such a daughtercard. For a mind numbing $40.

http://www.soundcardcentral.com/reviews/soundcards/zoltrix/page1.htm

Hm. Maybe I'd buy the MD from you... does it record?

time to get rid of that live card, is there much difference between the first generation live and the current ones? apart from the 5.1 ability now.

MD records, but unless you so happen to live in Aus, i don't think i'd sell the MD to you
