Theres already a thread on this somewhere, Nvidia beaten at their own game, im just waiting to see if its true though, bit of a bummer thats its only for the new x1k series cards though, so its a bit of a kick in the teeth to the rest of the ATi series owners, knowing that if they want this OpenGL performance, then they are going to have to shell out on a new card, where as Nvidias OpenGL performance is the same across the board.

But ATi having the opengl leadership is incredible!
I'm sure they CAN do something else to give X8xx cards better performance...
Remember all they've done is a memory controller tweak. X800 cards have partially programmable memory controllers... so they can do something there...

Heard in an interview a while back with one of their Catalyst driver team members that they were going to try and push the OGL front harder in the next few sets. This is nice, of course, and adds a whole lot of value to the X1K line, but it'd be nice to see a little something for the X800 owners out there as well. Like Dr. Vodka said, they've got at least a partially programmable memory controler, much like nVidia's GeForce 6 and 7 cards, so they should be able to do something with it.

Bah, OpenGL is on its last legs i would think, and D3d is going to be more in the loop. How many games that were OpenGL have a sequal that are now D3d? Serious sam 2 , HL 2 ( well it did have D3d option but Opengl was better at the time for this game, COD 2, Medal of hounor PA to name just a few.

Quake 4 is the only new OpenGL to come out for a long time other than Doom 3 ofcause, but seeing how Quake 4 is more or less Doom 3 in a different skirt ( well its the very same engine ) its was only logical to use OpenGl.

I would not fret to much about it hey, its to little to late for ATI to FINALLY fix open GL performance. On a good note though it will be interesting to see how the new x1k run D3d comparied to the 7800 cards, Its gonna be so freaking close that to buy a new card is going to be more or less a fan boys ride. Which is fine, nothing wrong sticking with one company, but for me. I dont really mind what card I run now. If ATI is cheaper Ill get it, if Nvidia are cheaper then its an Nvidia card for me. Ofcause you will always have the "so called gamers" :rolls eyes: who will buy a card based on 3d mark scores, lol that is so funny.
