Default Bf2 issues on 7800gtx - 08-11-2005, 14:44 | posts: 20 | Location: Chicago, IL

Hi,
I normally run bf2 at ultra high settings, 4x AA at 1600x1200, runs fine, ive benched 60 fps average playing through a few full games.
I tried tweaking a few settings yesterday to see if i could get higher, and thats when things went wierd. I tried lowering my res to 1280x960, everything else left the same. I tried playing a map i had played before, i get about 35fps avg for the game, its noticeably less smooth gameplay. So i try turning my res back up, it runs 45fps average. i then try changing all settings back to high, at 1600x1200, and i get 35 again. The only thing i can think of is that it says it needs to optimize shaders after those settings were changed, but it didnt when i loaded up a map to play it. Is there anyway to force the shader optimization, or is there any other problem i dont know of?
thanks

Yeah you can force a shader optimization by deleting the cache. Go into my documents/Battlefield2/Mods/BF2/Cache/... Then you'll have a folder per each profile in there with a long name. Just delete it, or them, and it will reoptimize next time you load a map. It does the same thing to me everytime I change my ingame video settings.

Thanks a lot, thats the only thing i can think of that would be slowing it down, it says it needs to optimize the shaders again when i change the settings, however it never does it.

Ive had no problems runnin BF2 with my 7800GTX. I run at 1024x768 (can't run higher because of monitor) with everything set to max in game and 4xAA, 16xAF and get between 70 and 150 FPS.

Because even at 1600x1200 jaggies are still noticable. Also with the 7800's you can run transparent AA which applies AA to more than just the pixels shown in focus (ie a fence behind a fence)

tbh the difference between 1600x1200 no AA and 1600x1200 with 4xAA is not that much but if you card can run it with no problems then hell crank up those settings. Let the 7800gtx shine!

i use fraps to bench it, i just hit the benchmark key at the beginning of a match and end it at the end.

exactly what xaser said too, i use 1600x1200 and AA because my card can run it, and it does still look better, even if not by much.
