Default Defragmentation not working - 08-02-2005, 13:34 | posts: 2,210 | Location: The Netherlands

I wanted to defragment by HD today, so I open the defragmentation program in Windows, select the drive and click defragment, but nothing happens. I click analyse and still nothing happens.

I keep clicking the analyse and defragment buttons but the program doesn't react.

What do I have to do?

Reboot, shut down all unnecessary programs and then try. Sometimes it takes a while to start. I believe this is caused by XP reading the Prefetch data to "Optimise" your disk.

I tried, but it didn't fix it. I've been disabling some extra services lately. Maybe I disabled a service that is needed by that program.

What services are needed to defrag a HD?

I downloaded DisKeeper 9 Pro and now everything is working perfectly fine. I recommend everyone to use this program because it's very easy to use and very fast.

I still don't know which service caused the problem, but that doesn't really matter anymore.

btw, I just noticed that I'm running my computer with only 7 services loaded. I have a lot of limitations now when using XP, but games are performing like never before.

Start DCOM Service Process Launcher under Services.
You may have diabled it for performance gains.

The built in defragmentor in Windows XP is the same technology which was licensed from Diskeeper, just doesn't have the 'realtime' feature

To manage your services, look in my signature for:

*Pserv.cpl - Allows you to control all NT,2K,XP services, devices and create, save and apply profiles Free - I use it*

Highly recommended.
