ok i was finally able to get an operating system on my new PC and all my drivers and stuff installed perfectly.... but now i cant get the internet to work on that computer. i've tried several things (i have comcast cable, btw) first i went into control panes ---> network connections ---> clicked on the connection and hit repair, it then says "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because thee following action cannot be completed: Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed. For assisstance, contact the person who manages your network." so i then call comcast and speak to a help person he has me try unplugging the cable modem and restarting the cable modem and all those types of things. none of which help he then has me disable the firewall on the server and go to start --> run --> type in "command"--> type in "ipconfig" ... he says it should give me my IP address but all it says is "Windows IP configuration" thats it no IP address... he then says that theres still some firewall up and i says i havent installed any firewalls the only one on there is the one that came on the WIndows XP service pack 2 he says he doesnt know whats wrong. so I'm counting on you guys to help me out please

what modem or router are you using?
How does it connect to your PC?
Did this connection work before your rebuild - or is this all new?

go to the command prompt and type
ping 127.0.0.1
this should ping your own machine. If this fails your network drivers aren't installed properly
*EDIT*
oh, and the ipconfig thing showing nothing has got bugger all to do with a firewall... If there was a firewall stopping you connecting to the DHCP server of the router (the part that gives you an IP address so you can access the interweb thingy) then ipconfig would either show the IP address as 0.0.0.0 or an address starting 169.254.

ah, no, I mean drivers for the network card in your machine. If you can't ping 127.0.0.1 there is problem with the network card in your machine, most likely drivers

the modem is on a USB cable, yes?
If this is the case - then don't worry about the ethernet cards etc.. they aren't relevant.
What are relevant are your drivers and settings.
Firstly make sure you have up to date drivers installed before you connect the modem. If you are already installed on an old driver - then disconnect, uninstall and reboot. Then go with the new ones.
You will also need to match any installation settings to your old machine - or get the details from comcast.
Repairing the network connection won't do any good if the modem is not configured on the machine correctly.
I have a fair idea with ADSL - not cable. Anyone else out there with a comcast modem that can list the settings?
www.comcast.net may help, but you may need to log in.

ok i downloaded the drivers for the modem from a website and saved it to a floppy. i was reading the instructions to install the drivers on this PC and it says you have to have a USB cable. im like what? my cable modem doesnt use USB cables i then look on the back of my modem and it does have a slot for USB cable... so im guessing u only need the USB cable when u install the drivers for the first time right? because ive never plugged a USB cable into the thing and its always ran fine. so i HAVE to have a USB cable to install the drivers? if i do do i have to have the one that came with the cable modem? because i dont... or will any USB cable work?

Same for a built in ethernet... it's still a networking device... Have you tried ping 127.0.0.1? did it work?
Also, that modem has an ethernet port so you shouldn't need drivers for your modem...
And yes any USB cable should work.

Ok, read the first line of my last post - this was asking if you were connecting it with a USB cable.
It appears from your comments that you are not.
1) What connections are you using? Ethernet or USB
2) What IP address is the modem?
3) If you type IPConfig on the old machine - what settings are you getting.
4) If you type ipconfig on the new machine what are you getting?
5) as jerboa stated - what happens if you type ping 127.0.0.1 on your machine?
@ Omar - I am in sunny Dubai
