Default Force Windows XP to unload DLLs - 03-27-2005, 09:38 | posts: 2,210 | Location: The Netherlands | User is Offline

I found this tweak on some websites:

Force XP to Unload DLLs
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer]
"AlwaysUnloadDLL"=dword:00000001

XP has a bad habit of keeping dynamic link libraries that are no longer in use resident in memory. Not only do the DLLs use up precious memory space, but they also tend to cause stability problems in some systems. To force XP to unload any DLLs in memory when the application that called them is no longer in memory, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer and find the DWORD "AlwaysUnloadDLL". You may need to create this key. Set the value to 1 to force the operating system to unload DLLs.

Will this tweak improve performance in games on my pc? ---------->

it's one of many many tweaks available. if you don't reboot often this is probably a good idea.

I think you can do the same thing using CachemanXP utility.

Use it or don't, what ever.

To this i must say no. Not even if you pray to god and start sacrificing virgins.
It's very small amounts of RAM that can be saved. (most dll's are small)

Edit:
Ok i see you only have 128mb RAM so maybe you can use it anyway. Just try it a see m8.

any memory management utils are a waste of time...they take more proc power than they free ram proportionately to performance.

the AlwaysUnloadDll tweak doesn't apply to winxp. microsoft states so on their website that this registry key is for operating systems prior to win2000. there are just too many bad tweaks on the net.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de.../debugging.asp

other bad tweaks are:
1. LargeSystemCache
2. IoPageLockLimit
3. IRQ8Priority
4. EnablePrefetcher to something other than 0, 1, 2, or 3

I thought TuneXP enables it...

TuneXP (here is some debate on some of the tweaks)
http://www.driverheaven.net/showthre...t=42579&page=5

Some say it this key that is not working. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\AlwaysUnloadDLL

But this one works. (this key is used by most XP tweak apps)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer]
"AlwaysUnloadDLL"=dword:00000001

The TuneXP guy's also claim that "Optimize prefetch" is faster on (the unsupported) 5.

I agree there are many bad tweaks out there.
But MS is not to helpful making it easy to find info.

If i look in the Windows 2000 Resource Kits under.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer

There is no Max Cached Icons info there but that works.

What about this one:

If you find yourself doing a lot of work with one demanding program, or you do not multi-task much, you can set Windows XP to devote more resources and processor time to the foreground (active) application than it will to any other processes. XP already does have a slight bias towards the foreground app, but you can increase it further with this simple registry edit:

Open Regedit and navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\PriorityControl'

Modify 'Win32PriorityControl' and give it a decimal value of 38.

that's the same thing as setting it to a value of "2", which is default anyways. it's the same as going into your system properties and changing the "processor scheduling" setting to "programs" instead of "background services." there are very little registry tweaks out there that can actually benefit and improve performance. i would only use the "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate" one and "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation". search for those. and also "DisablePagingExecutive" but there is hardly any performance difference at all with it on or off. all the other registry tweaks are really useless.

try some basic tweaks like disabling indexing service.
