I bought this board and have had all kinds of troubles...ALL coming from the cpu cooler backplate. If you change the cooler on this board MAKE DAMN SURE you have a back plate with an opening in the center that is AT LEAST 25mmx25mm.

Other than that this board is PERFECT!

Also, I have had some excellent results with this *beta* bios update

http://forum.msi.com.tw/thread.php?threadid=60212

Fixed the incorrect temp readings...mine dropped about 10°

Here is the latest *official* 1.4 bios update for the MSI K8N Neo Platinum

Not really sure. I RMA'd one board because after changing the cooler (stock to water) the board would no longer POST. The diag legs would hang at "Initializing Keyboard Controller". I changed the water block three times:

1st: Aquarius III block "I" shaped backplate (small circle hole) **did NOT work 100%**
2nd: Aquarius II block no backplate (uses two screws only) **worked**
3rd: Zalman water block (same as stock cooler except the square hole is 20mmx20mm where stock is 25mmx25mm) **did NOT work at all**

The only one that worked corectly was the Aquarius II block because it did not have any backplate to touch the diodes or whatever they are on the back of the cpu socket.

So, now I have mod'd the Zalman backplate to be 25mmx25mm instead of 20mmx20mm and I am running with no problems what so ever.

100% cpu @ a measly 111°F no C&Q (Folding @Home)

The 1.4 BIOS did indeed correct the incorrect CPU temp problem. I have been accustomed to this problem, many MSI boards I have worked with in the past seem to always have this trouble.

One builder to rule them all.

Only thing that would fix it is a bios update.

On the A64 retention mechinism there is a metal plate on the backside of the motherboard that the plastic screws into. This is to prevent motherboard bending like you would see on socket 478 installations.

Some boards come with specific plates so that it does not short out components on the backside when installed. These may or may not work with 3rd party plates.

My co-worker just got an xp-120 and it installs to the stock bracket so it wont be an issue for you.

For the backplate issue I experienced...simplty make sure that the space over the diodes is 25mmx25mm...that's all I can really say asside from what I've already said...for some reason this is an issue...either because of excess pressure or what I do not know...
