AMD 64 overclocking -
09-09-2004, 17:02
I was reading a thread in the General AMD forum about over clocking AMD 64's. Currently on my setup with my Asus K8v board, all I have done is change the FSB to 216. thats it. I would like to get more out of it but I am not sure what to do, to do this.

Well, just keep going is it... You can increase voltage to help, though if your board is K8T800 likely it has no PCI lock, so you may not get too far and could cause corruption on your hard drive if you go too high. You can also try upping the ram timings, and may help you to raise vddr a bit too.

On my mobo i did the following:
On the HT selection screen, lower the HT from 800 to 600
Got to the selection part of chipset speed
I am now running FSB at 220 x 11.Speed is 2420.
Memory on Turbo
I'am at work right now, but will post some screenies later on, and a more detailed guide
PS-That OC is on stock speeds

Hmm but wouldnt lower the HT speed sort of counteract the overclock? I have a Zalman cu7000 cooler on it so temps are pretty solid at under 100 Ferenheit (sorry dont have Cel. off top of my head) at full load. What was your 3dmark2003 cpu score?

Athlon 64s don't seem to be too HT-speed sensitive... try it and see, I guess. If your 3dmark scores go down, then you know it wasn't worth it.

The 3DM03 score is pretty much the same, give or take a few points. My ram is not up to scratch. The HT i think is more related to the speed from gpu/cpu than anithing else.I'l post some 3DM03 CPU scores later

wow, well my current cpu score is 720 i believe so thats a boost! I take it you had a 3200+ clawhammer (2.0 ghz, what I have) and overclocked it to that? or did you have the more rare 3400+ clawhammer (already at 2.2 ghz) and overclocked that?

is it just me or is everyone to lazy to add an extra T. lol it is HTT not HT. Intel has the HT technology AMD has the HTT technology. my highest stable OC on my 3400+(Newcastle) is 2664mhz and am VERY close to getting it stable at 2700mhz. I can get to 3ghz, but it is stable for a little under an hour. I think if I had W/Cing I could get 3ghz stable though.

I'm building an Athlon 3200+ Newcastle system with a DFI Lanparty UT nForce 3-250 board (based on the new reviews over at Anandtech) for gaming and home theater. One reason I'm getting the DFI board, even though it's not in stock until next week, is because it gets very high marks for overclocking. I also got two 512MB sticks of OCZ PC3200 DDR400. The problem is, it's a Socket 754 board, and I've heard a lot about single-channel configs being important to overclocking, but nothing that says that two sticks of RAM makes it impossible to OC. My question is: Should I send back the 2x512MB sticks (I haven't opened them yet) and get a single 1GB stick, or will it be fine the way it is? I'm not going to be OCing to insane speeds, but it'd be great to get around 10-15% increase. Thanks.

you can use 2 sticks of ram with no problem. I use twin Corsair 512mb sticks, and can OC great. I think what you are referring to is that the s754 memory controller doesn't support dual channel, so your 2 sticks of ram can only run in single channel, but the only thing that will hurt very much where you will notice a difference is benching in 3dmark01.

In the anandtech tests, the best timings got a little worse with each added stick:
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2198&p=7
But most people have 2x 512 MB, if its a limiting factor to overclocking, it couldn't be by very much.
Ah, wait, here we go:
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2198&p=6
There max OC on that board was:
308 x 8 {1:1 Memory, 1 DIMM)
270 x 9 at (1:1 Memory, 2 DIMMs)
So 38 MHz lower with the second DIMM. Though realize they took a 2.0 GHz Athlon 64 and dropped the multiplier. If it were running at the default multiplier, that would still be 2.7 GHz with 2 dimms! So 270 MHz FSB wouldn't be a real limiter on your CPU overclocking.
Another factor to keep in mind is that I don't think 1 GB sticks come any faster then PC3200, so that could slow you down even more then 2 sticks would.
Also, this is also a Clawhammer core. As another mod pointed out (John), this may well be the older revision, in which case it may not even be representative of more current Athlon 64s. Can't tell, unfortunately.

what other RAM in that price range (about $160) would be stable?

just make sure both sticks of ram is the same revision and it should work fine. people with the ram not posting together were using two different revisions of the same type. eg corsair 1.1 with 3.1 = no go. just buy a twinx pack and it should come with two of the exact same make.
