When Deep Purple burst on the scene, rock was already well established, lucrative busyness, with thousands of bands and solo-musicians enjoying the status of ''stars'', all over the (not even only western) world.
Even The Beatles could not be considered a real pioneers, since they appeared at the time when people like Ike Turner, Bill Haley & the Comets, Chuck Berry... have been at the top of their popularity...

They were a inspiration to many many bands though! things would look different if they never existed. same goes for the beatles.

There are plenty of idiots out there who can play the guitar. Not many who can play it WELL. Any fool can bash out 3 chords and call it punk, but that doesn't make you a musician by a long shot.
