I have a Toshiba TheaterWide HD TW40X81 TV but I'm not sure what is resolution is. It's likely a 720i but some review sites say it will do 1080i. The manual doesn't specify. Anybody know what HD res this TV will do?

According to the date (1999) on the Manual on the Toshiba website it is an old CRT model. I believe all CRTs can only produce maximum resolution of 800x600, Therefore it cannot produce 720i, 720p, or 1080i. But can possibily accept those inputs and scale it down to 800x600 (4:3).

all tv's can accept all sorts of signals. All the progressive signals are different HD types.

720p is 1280x768 while regular tv is 640x480.

since it's an old tv, I'd put my eggs in the 720i basket.

Well the TV itself is a 2001 model, not 1999 and it specifically does say its an HDTV. It just doesn't say what resolutions its supports. It's a large screen rear projection TV.

I'm guessing that's correct. I could test it but there's no way I'm forking out $50 for ATI's VGA to Component adapter.

There are plenty of CRT HDTVs... there is no such format as 720i...

HD signals can be both progressive and interlaced. 720p is 1280x720, not 768.

Looks like your RPTV is capable of 1200x7xx lines. But you should be looking for information regarding it NATIVE RESOLUTION. That is the maximum pixels of your display and what everything (480, 720, 1080) will be scaled to. Your TV will accept both 720p and 1080i, but will scale everything to that native res.

Unfortunately you only have component inputs, so your set is not HDCP compliant and you may be hurting when Blu-Ray and HD-DVD comes. Looks like those players will downscale to 480p over component only and output HD over digital HDCP compliant connections such as DVI and HDMI.

btw, CRT is still the best looking technology made...far superior to the flat panel technologies such as plasma, LCD and DLP.
