    hey guys,

im currently running 4k with my r9 290 and im pretty happy with it in most of the games.

but looking forward to gta 5, i am thinking about getting a second r9 290 for crossfire.

    and here starts the problem:

my board only offers one 2.0 X16 slot, the other slot is only 2.0 X4..

does anybody use such a strange combo like i want to use and can tell if, and how much performance i may lose?

That may be a problem as the r9 290 uses the PCIe lanes for crossfire data. if you had a card that used the old crossfire bridge It may be alright, but what your proposing is transferring 32gb (bi-directional) 2.0 x16 to a 8gb (bi-directional) 2.0 x4. that may cause your 2.0 x16 to slow down to x4 to match the slowest slot. I think...

Yeah, it's hard to answer this since most people have not encountered this situation.

Perhaps Hilbert could shed some light on this........................wink, nudge...:nerd:

Also, isn't GTA5 supposed to be getting Mantle? That may help if you can only realistically run a single 290.

    mantle is not confirmed.

also mantle will only help when cpu limited,
and im pretty sure i will not be cpu limited in 4k^^
