I am buying a new laptop to meet my music, video, internet needs for around £800. I am looking for laptops with a free vista upgrade and I have decided on the Dell Inspirion 6400 with the following specs:

    Components
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2.0 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 (incl Operating System Re-Installation CD)
MCE to Vista Premium Upgrade on www.dellvistaupgrade.com before 03/31/07
Basic Package, 2 Year At-Home Service
    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display
    2048MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)
    120GB (5,400rpm) Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW with Software
    128MB ATI® Mobility™ Radeon® X1300 HyperMemory™ graphics card
6 Cell, 56Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery

The Dell website states the following:

The combination of a 15.4" WSXGA+ screen & 128MB ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 graphic card will not be compatible with next generation Microsoft operating system Vista Home Premium and Vista Business!

    Why are they not compatible?

Is this a false statement to make people upgrade? It has one of the best cpus, 2gbs of ram and a half decent laptop GPU. They give the option to upgrade to a x1400 256mb but in my opinion there would be no difference.

Can someone Please Help me with this!

Because the X1300 does not have 128mb dedicated ram. It has 32mb or 64mb dedicated and the rest is Hypermemory. For full Vista Premium you need 128mb dedicated which is what the X1400 has..128mb dedicated and 128mb hypermemory.

The upgrade isn't much is it..last time I checked like $50US.

Yeah Dell only give you the choice of the two cards, neither of which are great! The difference is about $50. So its worth getting the x1400 then.

Its not for gaming but I dont want any issues with Vista when it finally comes out.

What do you think of the other specs? I don't know too much about laptops but as far as I'm aware thats a decent machine.

Any advice about what display to get. Dell offer true life and then an ultrasharp. I was just going to stick to the basic 15" wxga widescreen.

    thanks for the response

the truelife is a bit brighter, what girls tend to call Mac-like screens.
the ultrasharp is the same with just a higher resolution capacity.
personally, the truelife is fine, you dont really need 1600x1280 or whatever the ultrasharp is...

Ok Thanks, I decided to go for the regular screen and save some money. I heards the true life screens can be quite reflective.

Cheers mate. I have just got a 6400 myself but with GMA950. since its intergrated, will the memory spec needed by vista be a hurdle for integrated videos like mine?

    Mac like screens? LOL

they were and are the last to move to the shinier counterparts

anyway if you can get the non intergrated version of the gpu you should be fine
