I'm setting up a gaming rig for a buddy of mine using old parts I have laying around. The setup will be a Q6600 Core 2 Quad with a 1TB HDD and 6 GB of ram and a 630W PSU. Will that be enough power from the power supply to power an EVGA GTX 460 as a main display and then an EVGA 8800 GT (G92 Model) as a dedicated PhysX card?
eh imo i wouldnt. that psu only has 432 watts on its two 12v rails 22amp rails. raidmax aka raidtronics are generally very cheap power supplies and a quick google search i saw several stories of it going out in smoke. id start off with something like the tx650v2. 70$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020
I wasn't planning on upgrading anything...I'm just putting some of my old parts together on a rig for him so I can get them out of my closet, I was just checking to see if it was possible haha. Thanks for the input!
So just making sure, you dont think it will work? Also, if I plug it in and it's not enough power, what will happen?
well it might, but even if it would that psu wouldnt last very long. i reckon if u did try it out, it would either burn out( stories ive read) or you would have constant shutdowns while under load.
Don't compromise on power supplies. I've lost a lot of hardware due to that mistake when I was new to system building. Maybe we can help you choose a new one?
Maybe you can, he's on a tight budget so he doesn't have much money to put into one at all. Is there one around 60-75 bucks that would be decent?
Same as what Agent said or, Ditch the 8800GT for physx (will only slow you down) and get a corsair Cx500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027) and save some cash, power and reduce the heat output by kicking out the 8800.
I think an 8800gt would be a good match as physics card for a 460, provided the power supply can handle both cards.
