Let see how "free" this will be...
For sure AMD and VESA will not make any benefice on it.
But concerning screen/scaler makers... that will probably be another story.

There were scalers before capable to do adaptive-sync. And 3 scaler manufacturers confirmed they will make chips with adaptive-sync capability.
3 is enough to have competition and reasonable pricing.

    And then monitors manufacturers...
While ASUS makes super expensive GSync screens, they have "deepened" cooperation with AMD, so I believe we'll see some FreeSync screens from them 1st. And as AMD want's not more expensive than standard 144Hz screens.

My ideal is 1440p + 144Hz + FreeSync + FPR passive 3D. That would be king of the hill monitor for next 3-5 years.

I've been reading that free sync only reduces tearing not eliminating it & at the moment only works in a narrow band between 40Hz - 60Hz.

Well, for the sake of the business I hope those news to stay true, although I don't think so. I wouldn't count on any f-sync screen to hit your desks in 2014 :D
