Hey guys, I'm thinking of replacing my aging HSF as it seems to not play nice with the Core i5 3570K once I actually push the clocks. Right now I overclocked it to 4.0 GHz with boost up to 4.5 GHz (4 cores = 4.2 GHz, 3 cores = 4.3 GHz, 2 cores = 4.4 GHz, 1 core = 4.5 GHz) and when I run IBT or anything really stressful, the CPU can reach over 86C and that's well, rather dangerous. Looks like my trusty Zalman CNPS-8700LED I got in 2008 isn't gonna cut it no more. Surprised it still fits in the LGA1155 socket. So, question is, what's the best bang for the buck HSF I could get around $50-75 (max, preferably tax included). Sales tax is 13% here in Ontario. Preferably not gigantic as well because I have the Cooler Master 690 II Advanced, no need something as big as the Cooler Master V8 cooler and I'd prefer it if it can fit in many different types of sockets including both AMD and Intel sockets. I'm thinking something like this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103057 or this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106187 Thoughts? Cheers, deltatux
I'd go with the Thermaltake. If you was in the states, I have a lightly used Megahelm id sell to you for cheap.
In your price bracket why not get the Prolimatech Megahalems? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835242008 If you have a couple of quality fans this is a solid performer.
What type of fans would go with these? Are fans for these heatsinks easy to find? Usually I see case fans on sale, not really HSF fans on sale in stores. Any recommendation on fans? deltatux
According to prolimatech, fans 1600 rpm and higher are recommended. That's what I suggested the scythe fans. I believe those are 1850 rpm. But not sure how readily available they are up there.
Well that Rev C takes 140mm and 120mm fans so you have a wide choice available. 140mm fans are going to give you motherboard a bit of extra airflow which is a bonus and you have the other added bonus of higher airflows at lower RPM's. Personally I like Noctua fans but the colour is not for everyone and the price is high but you get what you pay for. 2 of the NF-A15's from Noctua would be my choice, but that will push the price up quite a bit. I think they've always said that but 1600+ RPM can be loud and I believe fans with good static pressure overcome that minor restriction on the specs. Another thought delta are the Scythe Gentle Typhoon range, great static pressure and they look awesome! Cheaper than the Noctua's too.
Quite hard to come by IIRC, though. Could always consider one of the Noctua coolers themselves. Not sure how they're priced in Canada, but over here the NH-D14 has really come down in price, they're about £50 now. Might be able to grab a NH-D12 or similar in your budget, but as has been said, the colour isn't for everyone.
Ooooh, those do look nice. Temptations after spending soooo much on Noctua ones though... There's always this one delta: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014 Not too much more than that Thermaltake jobby.
Very nice *drools* Static pressure lags behind the Noctua's even with the L.N.A. in use, but they look sweet.
If I get two fans to do a push/pull configuration, how do I plug them in, would I need two PWM headers on my motherboard? I don't really want them to run at 100% 24/7, that'll just drive me nuts lol. The fans shown here looks like regular case fans, is that right? Cheers, deltatux
