Default Afterburner Lag (Only in certain games) - 05-26-2012, 00:12 | posts: 2 | Location: Kiev, UA

Hey people,

So as stated in the title, I'm having trouble with recording lag with Afterburner but only with certain games. For example, I sometimes record at native res (2560x1600) in say, Skyrim or BF3 or something and the performance hit is pretty much non-existent; maybe a 3 or 4 frame rate loss. However, I go and try to record in a game like Mass Effect (1, 2 or 3) or Madness Returns and I go from a smooth 60 FPS down to like 5 or 10 FPS. UE3 engine games seem to be affected the most but certain other games not using the UE3 engine have had problems too (ie Vindictus and Trine (1 and 2)). And I've tried reduced resolutions and halving frame size and cutting quality but to no avail. The hit is the same no matter what. Normally, I'd just use FRAPS to overcome it but I really hate the performance hit that FRAPS gives you and I hate that I have to fire it up when I want to record certain games; I'd much rather use Afterburner for everything. If someone could help me figure out what's going on, I'd much appreciate it. I've seen videos on YouTube with people recording gameplay of ME or MR or some other game that I'm lagging with using Afterburner and their video is glass smooth, so it's got to be something on my end.

I don't know how much help my specs would give but I'd hate to have a post just asking for my specs so here they are;
Intel Core i7-2600K
16BG DDR3 RAM
nVidia GTX 580
MSI P67A-GD65 (B3)
Ultra Products U12-40841 X4 1000W PSU
Recording mainly at 1080p to 128GB SSD

And just in case, my recording settings are as follows;
Video Format - MJPG Compression
Quality - 100%
Frame Size - Full Frame
Framerate - 30 FPS
Framerate Limit - Disabled
Gamma Correction - Enabled
Multithreaded Optimization - Auto
Audio Capture - Enabled
Downmixing - Enabled

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

EDIT: I am using the latest drivers for everything and using the current stable build of Afterburner (2.2.1)

I can't believe I fixed it! It was such a simple fix; all I had to do was mess around with a few settings in the On-Screen Display settings. Specifically, enabling compatibility with modified d3d runtime libraries and setting app detection level for some games as 'high'. I guess that's the cost of having a power tool like Afterburner; it'll work like a charm and better than your run-of-the-mill program if it's set up correctly but sometimes the problem is setting it up correctly. xD
