Default CPU cooler won't fit - 08-08-2012, 11:18 | posts: 312

Hey again, I've got another very annoying issue to post here. problem is: I just installed everything in my new computer and finished with the biggest part - the Scythe Grand Kama Cross cooler (it's a big bastard with a 140mm fan on top) - and I can't get it to clip on the frame on the motherboard. I'm missing about 3mm, so there's no way I can place it. For as far as I've seen, there's nothing blocking it and if I can clip it on 1 side (since I'm using the AMD bracket provided with the cooler, which has 1 clip at each side), the cooler is tilted at a small angle, so there's about 5-10mm between the other clip and the motherboard bracket clip.

Is it possible that the motherboard bracket for AM3 is different from the one for AM3+? Because the cooler was first on a AM3 motherboard and now I'm trying to place it on a AM3+ motherboard.
I thought AM3 and AM3+ were physically the same in every way except for 1 pin on the processor, so if that's true, how does it not fit?

If that's not the issue, can anybody guess what it could be? I'm using that cooler on a Phenom II X4 965, placed on a ASRock 990FX Extreme3.

Did you have the same problem when you install it on your am3 board?
Sometime the AMD clip system need to be push very hard may be you can try to turn your cooler at 180°.

I didn't install it myself on my old motherboard. The retailer assembled that pc.

Anyway, I contacted Scythe through their forum and I had to adjust the clip height (which isn't officially supported for some reason, but they said it was the only way to solve the problem) and now it just fits.
