I'm at a loss for this issue.

    Currently using:
    Corsair H100i GTX cooler i
    7 7700k CPU
    Gigabyte Z170 HD3 motherboard.

Idle temps in the CPU reading is around 32-33 degrees with am ambient temp reading of 28 degrees.

However under load (Intel burn test) It fluctuates between 60-70 degrees and 99 degrees. Not sure what is going on.
I checked the mount and it is on tight.
    There was thermal paste.
I'm wondering whether a temp reading/monitor is shot on the motherboard? Why would it fluctuate that much?

I though it was maybe the cooler, but this was happening on a different cooler...which is why I went out and bought the H100i thinking it was the cooler...

    Temp graph looks like this:

No longer fluctuating hitting the 90s...is it a seating issue?

Just reseated it... there is no change

The H100iGTX temp readings seem fine...why is my TEMP #2 so high?

CPUID is reading that temperature as the core temps:

First off, check with proper software.

    The best is hwinfo64(it's free).

    hwmonitor can be buggy.

Edit: btw tmp2 is being read wrong so you can ignore it.

whew okay, cuz it was tying in with my CPU core temps... I guess all is well then?

Well used hwinfo on prime 95...doesn't look good if those readings are right...

Are those temps with prime95 or intel burn test?

If IBT, it uses AVX extensions which overvolt CPU automatically and draw much more power which creates much more heat.

P95 26.6 is perfect real world max usage test and you can expect IBT to be 20-30c over the P95 temps.

But whatever you're doing, stop it, 100c is very high.

If that's from p95 26.6 then you have an issue.

Poor contact from heatsink which can be caused by poor installation of hardware and/or thermal paste.

Also make sure fan is running on the Corsair and water pump.
I assume it is because your corsair link picture shows RPMs on both.

    It was done in prime

I took off the contact to check to make sure it was solid, and it was. The paste was well spread out and everything. And this was happening from my last cooler too, and that was an air cooler. Got the second readings and they were still the same after the reseat.

The sensors show the fan and pump are running.

Not sure what else I can troubleshoot at this point, whether it is the Z170 mobo or maybe a faulty CPU?

You still have not confirmed what prime95 version you are running. For Haswell and above, don't use p95 above version 26.6

After some googling there seem to be a bug on some early bioses for some z170 boards. See if there is a bios update awailable for your motherboard and update.

I see that F6 bios fixes some p95 issues on your board.. might be it. Not much explained.

Also, have you tried resetting the bios?

Or, you might have the poor IHS/die contact issue that can only be solved by de-lidding...

Also, you do not mention clock speeds nor voltages.

You might want to check your cooler block isnt clogged with scale, had similar issue with my h110gt, after i striped the block down and descaled the copper in boiling water and descaler i changed the coolant to mayhems uv clear and it still crystal clear after 8 months.

Voltage and power readings are too low to be reaching those extreme temps,, so it's the cooler or the contact between HS-die. You should try with any air cooler to rule out (or not) the H100i.
In the 2n case you'd better ask for a replacement.

Yeah just got the cooler. Not sure why it's acting up. Lik I said air cooler Master V8 the as acting up doing the same thint. Mounting and all of that is fresh and new.

dzy_1 I see you have a z170 board with Kaby. Do you have the latest bios installed? Could be that the temps are being reported wrong.

Yeah i have the latest bios. It won't boot without it. The cooler is new so I don't think its buildup, and the cooling block temps are increasing but not up to 90 like the core. Plus it was happening on my old air cooler. Should I go and exchange the cpu for a different one to rule out the contact issue? Its a new chip so I'm still in the return period.

Also as it is idling its a constant 30-33 degrees...if the contact isn't right shouldn't it be higher on idle?

I think I will just go back and exchange for a different one, maybe the lid on this is an issue...Should I just go back to a skylake 6700k instead or still try my luck with another 7700K?

Return it. Get another 7700k, they click higher than Skylake.

Since you are sure it's not a mounting issue, it could be the paste inside the CPU core and heatspreader have poor contact..

Only solution is to replace it or delid.
You should probably replace it though.
