LucAnne (Parents name so they won't go OMG WTF WEIRD WIFI NAME DURRR HUURRR). Doesn't broadcast Used to have a subnet that could hold JUST our PC's so no more free IP's (gone now with those damn smartphones, had to create a larger subnet) MAC Address Filtering (bit of a nuisance if friends visit with their devices though) WiFi Disables itself at night to save power, etc (my PC is the only device at night and it uses an Ethernet cable so) That's what I did when my Sitecom broke and I bought the ASUS. I know most stuff out of my head and some details are backed up in some txt files on external drives (like the MAC addresses).
You forgot to disable DHCP forcing each client to define a specific IP address in a non-disclosed subnet and reducing the antenna's signal to the minimum usable range I too had MAC filtering at first but ended up disabling it for the same reason, I got tired of having to manually enter every MAC.
I did that some time ago. Until my parents bought some cheap crap Android tablet for my sister that couldn't do static ip... I kid you not, it was that crap. Even made this batch file and showed my parents how to use it to switch between our network/outside world dhcp environment back in the days: Code: @ECHO OFF :LOOP ECHO Choose Network: ECHO. ECHO 1. Modem ECHO 2. Router ECHO. SET /P USERPARM="Network: " IF "%USERPARM%"=="2" (GOTO :ROUTER) ELSE (IF "%USERPARM%"=="1" (GOTO :MODEM) ELSE (GOTO :FAIL)) :FAIL ECHO. ECHO. ECHO *** Please enter a correct number (1 or 2) *** ECHO. ECHO. GOTO :LOOP :ROUTER netsh interface ipv4 set dns "LAN" static x.x.x.x >NUL netsh interface ipv4 set address "LAN" static 192.168.x.2 255.255.255.0 192.168.x.1 >NUL ECHO. ECHO *** Network configured for ROUTER *** GOTO :END :MODEM netsh interface ipv4 set dns "LAN" static x.x.x.x >NUL netsh interface ipv4 set address "LAN" static 192.168.x.x 255.255.255.0 192.168.x.1 >NUL ECHO. ECHO *** Network configured for MODEM *** GOTO :END :END ECHO. ECHO. ipconfig ECHO. ECHO. pause Now I just use it for when I have to do troubleshooting between networks and need to switch rapidly between 2 networks on a lappy. Used to be called "Home" and "Outside" or something instead of "Router" and "Modem". Thing is that the "Alternate" network setting took some time to initiate in Windows and that threw em off into thinking something was wrong everytime, this was a quicker way.
^^ I just enable WPA2 AES Don't see the need for mega paranoia tactics on a home network surrounded by old people and kids with no clue If a hacker is good enough to crack WPA2 without WPS, then all the above would be useless anyway imo
Really?. About a month ago I came across a tablet that could not navigate to many sites. It could not even connect to a Google account. Turns out that after rooting it I found it came with a hosts file that routed many Google and social networks sites to chinese proxies . It was huge. Renamed it and voila!
+1 I know it's boring, but I can see which devices my neighbours have, kind of interesting, isn't it? No? Nevermind... :nerd:
openwireless.org Cause: https://openwireless.org/ If your router has a guest wifi option then you can keep your home network separate from the openwireless guest one. Sure, depends entirely where you live and if you can choke the guest connection enough where your neighbors won't be using it for porn torrents. Personally I'm torn, because I know that probably 90% of the people connecting are probably doing ****all of any worth, but I like: and also
