I have been very confused as to what to exactly upgrade from my current rig as it plays everything with maxed out settings on 1080p ..I did a little saving and realised I could upgrade my comp to a i5 3570 wgtg 8gb ram with a z77 motherboard.. but is it really worth upgrading my comp or should I wait as everything runs great.. or will the upgrade give me a boost to justify the money I spend please advice me...

it depends on on resolution you play. for gaming 5870 is still very good.
if you have tech hunger like me who upgraded from 2600k and 460gtx sli to this rig, then its a completely different story and i can understand lol.
if not and if its all about gaming? why dont you just slap another one of that 5870 and get another 2 years out of your rig? they run cheap now. buy used.

Also, what avg and minimum fps do you expect to get?
ie what do you determine to be playable and/or acceptable?
This can vary between games as well, some look ok at 30fps, others dont look smooth.
It would help if you can define
"it plays everything with maxed out settings on 1080p"
...a bit better.

Why not?
He maxed out the options in game and even got away with adding some AA (which varies from person to person on how much it effects them).
