    High DPC Latency Problem

I've been having a problem with my system for a few months now and I just can't figure this out. I'm getting extremely high DPC latency even when sitting idle on my desktop on Windows 7 (64-bit). This of course causes horrible sound cracks and pops. This started happening shortly after I got a new motherboard and processor, but not immediately. I can't trace it to anything specific.

This is what it looks like when I'm doing anything... browsing the web, trying to play music or just about anything.

    System:
    Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3ghz Processor
    ASUS P8H67-M Le Motherboard
    8GB Kingston RAM
eVGA Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ Video Card
    Windows 7 64-bit

I've tried all kinds of things to fix this to no avail:
    • Updated all drivers, motherboard, sound, nic, etc.
    • Updated BIOS on motherboard
    • Disabled everything extra in BIOS and Device Manager
    • Removed extra cards/peripherals
    • Disabled on-board sound in BIOS
    • Tried about the last 6 versions of NVidia drivers
    • Different versions of Realtek audio drivers
    • Different versions of Realtek Network adapter drivers
    • Reinstalling Windows 7 on a different hard drive
    • Forcing 3D mode with RivaTuner

The ONLY way I've been able to see normal DPC Latency is to uninstall the NVidia drivers and reboot... so not sure if that's because the drivers are causing the problem or just because the video card isn't really doing much without the drivers installed.

EDIT: Adding Details from xperf results

I'd REALLY appreciate any tips on what else to try, I'm at wit's end here!

    Thanks!

Try disabling HPET in bios, High precision event timer and see if that helps.

Hey thanks for that link I'm always on the lookout for new knowledge (gotta love the Internet).... this link might help me with a minor DPC latency issue on my old computer that mostly sits as a server but I'll be needing it's horsepower at an upcoming LAN party.

Not sure if this is relevant but if i'm downloading something I get really bad crackling and popping in my wireless headphones as i'm using a USB wireless dongle but I think that's because of wireless interference.

If you are using the front panel/ the cases own usb ports thats common. try the back of the pc.

if not, dont use wireless HPs.. lol

If you are too lazy to do what the link in sg3 says then you shouldnt ask questions.

I did update BIOS to latest version. Have tried disabling Aero as well. Working on getting an ATI card from a friend to test with. I'll also try and dig up the CD that came with my video card and try those drivers. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah I've read in quite a few places that they had fixed some previous issues with them... but I've tried using about 6 of the most recent versions of the drivers and have the latest ones loaded right now. I'll see if I can play around with some of the BIOS settings for the CPU and see if that helps. Thanks!

    High DPC latency problem

Ok I ran xperf and it showed the same things I've noticed With LatencyMon in the past... it keeps pointing to USBPORT.SYS, ATAPORT.SYS and HDAudBus.sys. I have the latest drivers for my motherboard installed, not sure what else I can do here?

Here's the versions of these 3 files on my system:
    "ataport.SYS", "6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)"
    "usbport.sys", "6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)"
    "hdaudbus.sys", "6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)"

Any suggestions on where to go from here? With all of these consistently showing up, does that mean my motherboard is the culprit or something else?

    Thanks Again.

I thought it was since I don't have the problem when uninstalling the nvidia drivers.

Can you post the full lines for those 3 files? The magnitude of the latency will be a factor in determining if it is normal operation or a problem.

As an example, certain things would "trigger" my problem. One of those triggers that would 100% cause my system to slideshow was running 3dmark11 - in the end I switched from IDE to AHCI mode for that controller in my bios and it solved the problem. ataport.sys was the device driver with huge interrupt usage when I was diagnosing the issue.

The few DPC spikes I'd get (popping when using a USB DAC -> AMP for audio... which used built-in Windows USB audio drivers) I fixed by disabling Speedstep and turbo mode.. basically when the CPU manipulates it's clocks it can screws up handling of audio buffers in some cases.

But that said, it wasn't anything to do with the NVIDIA driver.

I think you should just uninstall your onboard sound and buy a dedicated PCIe sound card.

Youll get amazing sound, and no latency issue. gl
