for PC gaming, what would look better and less expensive ? a 30-40 inch lcd 1080pHDTV or a 30-40 inch lcd monitor . i think i'm correct in believing that large monitors can support higher resolutions, but then why would anyone want to connect their pc to an equal sized hdtv?.I currently have a 17" LCD, its native res is 1280x1024 for my monster 9800 Gx2 :deflate:

I connect my PC to my HDTV via hdmi and i sit arround a meter away from it. Even though my TV is 32 inches, its native res 1920x1080 (Sharp LC-32X20E 32" 1080p display) is perfect for me - not to big to be daunghting ye big enough to notice the extra details in high-def movies.

BTW using a 17" monitor with a 9800GX2 is a waste of power in my opinion and you have room to improve image quality significantly. All the more reason you should get at least a 24 inch monitor or a 1080p HDTV.

Before my current display, I use to have a 26 inch monitor (Acer AL2623W) with a native res of 1920x1200. All the games I have played (with the exception of Crysis ) with my 8800Ultra, i was able to ramp up all details to max and apply 4xAA and 16xAF and it didn't even batter an eyelid.

Since your 9800GX2 is more powerful than my Ultra, I would recommend you get a display capable of displaying at least 1080p. In the long run you will be significantly impressed and won't want to go back.

for arcade games a huge screen is great, for FPS, i wouldnt go anything above 32", even thats too big because for FPS you wanna be right in front of it

You could consider a 30"er from Dell or one of the Apple Cinema Displays. Not cheap, but certainly some the best monitors around.

Anything larger than that and I think it would be awkward to play.

i chose to buy a 40Inch Samsung HDTV for 1500$ beside upgrading my rig... and believe me when u plugin ur PC to an HDTV, there is no way back to old LCDs.

plus using PIP (picture in Picture) i watch HDTV while surfing the net on my PC ;)

I don't really know of any tvs to suggest, but I know one you shouldn't get if you want the highest resolutions possible, Vizio.

    The Vizio 32" lcd is a great tv, I have one hanging on my wall, but it supports really strange resolutions;
1366 x 768, 1024 x 768, 854 x 480, 800 x 600. I have no clue if these suck, are good, or if their even real resolutions. for all I know, Vizio could have pulled these out of their arse just to mess with us.

with asymmetrical pixels (lcd tvs have these) 1366x768 is the appropriate resolution for 720p. My Samsung 26" HDTV is 1366x768... in the UK, whenever you see "hd ready" the tv will be 1366x768.

The reason these resolutions seem strange is because they are not supposed to be used as PC monitors, they are supposed to be used as TVs. most PC monitors are 16:10, whereas TVs will be 16:9.

I have a 42" LG plasma with a HTPC hooked up to it. It's great for Mame and other emulators, but faster things like Gears of War, I notice a little bit of shadowing. What's weird though is the shadowing's not there for GoW on my 360. Figure that one out. lol

Thanks for your opinions, Im testing my new 42" hdtv with Crysis. Is a huge difference in Image quality compared with my old monitor.also running crysis at
720p Very high with 8xAA was not a problem for this card solid 45 to 55 fps and in Very high 1080p without AA 28 to 35 fps. :D

I wonder how much the 3870x2 would get? It scales well to the 9800 series, and I'd suppose it'd be just down the 35-40fps ally,

I sometimes play fps games on a 73" screen and it does in fact hinder your gameplay a little. Because of the way our eyes work it's harder to spot the enemy flanking you. Our eyes are built to be really sensitive to movement in the peripheral areas. But on a huge screen what's supposed to be the peripheral is actually just off center in the dull area of our eyes. Long story short you get a lot of "wtf I shoulda seen that guy" moments. On a smaller monitor everything is dead set in front of you so everything is visible in the eyes strong vision area.

Ok guys that'll be all for today's lesson turn to page 34 for your assignment and have a nice weekend.

right the 32" is $600 from Westinghouse but it doesn't support true hd as it only has resolution of 1366x768, but anyways seems like OP bought a new 42" tv, hope your enjoying it
