New video card

Discussion in 'Videocards - Intel ARC & ARC Driver section' started by Ole Kaiwalker, Aug 19, 2001.

  1. Would it be a good deal for my to buy the kyro II and replace it with my old hercules geforce 2 MX. would i get a performance boost with the new card.

my system:
athlon 650 (soon overcolked)
288mb pc 100 ram (can't get it to pc 133 because I have one pc 100)
30 gb harddrive
Hercules Geforce 2 MX (with 12.41)
Terratec DMX Xfire 1024

It really depends what games you play and what res you like to use. In some circumstances Kyro II would be 100% faster or even more (like high res, 32bit and FSAA). But in some cases it wouldn't be much faster at all. Its safe to say that if you like playing at 1024x768x32 it'll be faster in just about every game, but maybe not faster enough to make it worth getting.

But if you like playing at 800x600x32 4xFSAA or even 1024x768x32 4xFSAA or 1280x1024x32 or higher without FSAA you'll get a large performance increase in all games. As I said it depends on how much eye candy you need.

  5. Oki thx for the wise words

it's just that I like to play in the resolution 1024*768*16/32 but my old geforce 2 mx can't take it in all games so I was thinking of the KyroII but isn't my cpu too bad for a KyroII (it's should have a big CPU too work propebly)
IMO, your spending maybe $20 more for a component that isn't that much better. $20 than retail of your mx that is. If you were deciding between which one to buy, kyro 2 yes. And yes your a little underpowered too.

So to get it working optimally you would need a new processor, mobo.
and then buy the video card. Are your frame rates that bad? I doubt it yet.

Well with most games once your bandwidth/fillrate limited the CPU becomes less of an issue. I'd say your CPU won't get the best out of a Kyro II at but once you hit high res the gap between CPU limit and fillrate/bandiwdth limit closes. Is there any chance of overclocking that Athlon BTW?
It is much better then an MX on a good system. There's some benches below from the Firing Squad Kyro II review. I took the scores from OleKaiwalker's preferred res of 1024x768x32 and up (640x480x32 4xFSAA and 800x600x32 4xFSAA being up from 1024x768x32 because of there higher source resolution and higher IQ even though the output is less then 1024x768x32).

As you can see the Kyro II beats the MX in every test often doubling (or more) its score. Admittedly those benches are using an Athlon 1GHZ. But most tests at and over 1024x768x32 will be bandwidth limited anyway on a MX even with a Ahtlon 650. OleKaiwalker won't see as much difference between his MX and a Kyro II at 1024x768x32 as those scores suggest. But anything over that will be so bandwidth limited on the MX that its likely he will see similar differences.

OleKaiwalker, if you only want to play at 1024x768x32 and can't overclock that Athlon then you won't see to much difference between that MX and a Kyro II. So its probably not worth buying the Kyro II in that situation (though Kyro II still will be faster in games). But if you want to go higher to 1280x1024x32 or more or using FSAA you can have that at about the same speed as you get at 800x600x32 on your MX. Unless you come accross a highly HW T&L optimised game were you might get a little better performance at 800x600x32 with your MX then with the Kyro II. It all depends what you want I suppose. And with the Kyro II there's also the fact that as you upgrade your system your performance will keep growing and growing even at 1024x768x32. Were as with the MX upgrading the CPU will most likely give you no performance increase at 1024x768x32.

P.S. this is Teasy, I finally re-registered.
