Worth it to upgrade from a Phenom II X4 970 to an FX 8350?

With the holidays coming around and the deals that come with it, I was looking at cpu's today and was just curious of the above upgrade would make much sense for me. I run an R9 280, does the Phenom bottleneck that at all in games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim SE? Note I'm not much of an overclocker, my board doesn't seem to like it much, so I'm talking from a point of view of stock settings here.

You can get a really good deal now of the Fx series, I picked-up ours for like $80 bucks thats a (steal) for a 8-core cpu in my opinion.

Is it faster then the 4-core Phenom? Yes it is.

Just buy a Fx 8320 and overclock it,save some money
Buy a 8320e like mine same thing- I got this one up to 4.2 ghz.

I also owned the Fx 8350,9370,6100, To be honest its very hard to tell a diffrence between any of the 8-core parts.

Thanks for the reply. I know I'm not going to get any massive FPS upgrades with the upgrade, just wondering if I might see any small boosts at all.

Also for the record I know I could just wait for Zen or go Intel, and ideally that would be an option but I'm really not in the market right now for the wholesale upgrades required there, not to mention the new Windows key on top of that.

    You can transfer your key.

But don't bother wasting any money on that platform.

Just wait until you are able to upgrade.

If I do then I'm stuck with a new problem...what else to get. Can't go a Christmas without doing something for the ole' rig. :)

If you can get one for a very decent price then it would be 'worth it'. Sell your Phenom and recoup some of the cost. It would at least tie you over until a more major upgrade such as to Zen. This is only true if you can't wait until say, April, or a full upgrade isn't in your price range for the next say, 6 months.

Zen is just around the corner, wait for it! Couple of reasons.

Zen may offer a good performance boost for a good price.

    Or

Zen will most likely bring down cost of older platforms.

I'm in full agreement with vbetts, with Zen so close it only makes sense to wait at this point. At least wait until the livestream from AMD on the 13'th for more information on Zen. :nerd:

Sure you would see some benefits in the upgrade from a Phenom II quad to an fx8350 with the new architectural advances and speed but the AM3 socket is a dead platform and Zen is just around the corner. So I would wait until Zen is released.

I agree I feel that Zen might bring AMD back to where it was back during the early 2000s.

Ha! So I'm with the fam on Christmas, and what do I get as a gift? An 8350. So guess that answers my question, maybe I will go for that SSD. :)

For the record, it did actually improve performance in Fallout 4 somewhat. Nothing off the charts of course, but its definitely welcome. I had to turn off that Core C6 state option in UEFI though...caused a highly irritating whine from either the PSU or the mobo, which I hear is common.

That game is the worst example, you should see more gain in dx12 titles.

Yeah, I know, its using an ancient engine and is poorly optimized. Just need to find a DX12 game that tickles my fancy.

Don't run that 8350 any higher than stock or you're asking for trouble.

That motherboard only has 4phases for CPU aka not designed for it or the power draw.

Think you said you don't oc but just letting you know, the VRMs will likely pop.

Idk about that to be honest, my old crappy ASUS 4-phase motherboard was able to push the 8320 to 4.5ghz with no issues or throttling what-so-ever. The temperature never got to 60C, with the Hyper 212 Evo.

With the motherboard I've got now, it can go higher but I'm not a fan of the max temp even though its within the 'safe' barrier.
