I ordered a new Dell Inspiron 9400 with the following specs below, I'm just wondering how decent this will be for gaming, on this computer 1GB of RAM was really killing me, but I'm wondering if the DDR2 will make a good difference.

    Intel 2GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 4MB Level 2 Cache, 667MHz FSB

    1GB 667MHZ DDR2 Ram

    256MB nVidia 7900GS

The laptop will be OK for gaming hence the specs you gave.

Thats a nice configuration for the laptop. How much did you bought it for?

It will be pretty comperable to your Desktop, with the exception of having a much better CPU.

I got it for $2800 Australian, that works out to be about $1800 or so for US dollars, I got it brand new from eBay, 3 year warranty, never been opened and all.

Expect a somewhere to your dekstop performance wise or maybe a little better since it has a Core 2 Duo in it and more memory.

I would HIGHLY recommend you getting another gig of ram. It will make a big difference in gaming. Trust me. I have almost the same specs and 2 GIGS works out perfectly.

Depends heavily on what game and what settings you run.

For example Battlefield 2 running max settings with dynamic lighting on does indeed require 2gb of ram, however turn it off (does it make a difference) only requires 1gb of ram.

For reference I am running BF2142 on my laptop with only 1,25gb of ram and I ran BF2 perfectly fine on my old pc with only 1gb of ram.

However I will definately agree if you run very high resolutions and like every setting max then 2gb is the way to go but 1gb is still perfectly fine.

yes this is off topic but do Celly D's come with 512k cache? ive not seen 1 (Xaser)

anyway the extra 1gb of ram would help at newer games, but lets not forget prices will change and its cheaper to buy and add ureself

The Cedar Mill Celeron D processors have a 512KB L2 cache. They are socket LGA 775.

    Yup the new 352, 356 and 360 all have 512k cache. (3.2ghz / 3.33ghz / 3.41ghz)

This is why I picked one up from ebuyer as it is basically a northwood B pentium 4 but based on the presler core.

    Runs at 3.33ghz with a 533 fsb and has 512k L2 cache.

Not bad for £42 inc vat really.

They are meant to oc like wild fire as well, One guy on XS has his up to 5.4ghz on air cooling with only minor volt increase. At that speed it is running a 27 second super pi which for a pentium based chip isn't bad at all.
