did u install the AGP drivers first?

Btw iirc there was some overlay problem with later nvidia drivers for 5xxx. After 16x.xx maybe? God this is stretching my brain.

    Cheers for that.

Now to make an MSDOS Floppy xD

Ill update the bios on this other mobo so it will detect my 120gb IDE drive (has no cap limit setting) and then make sure this fx5200 actually still works.

If it does work on this mobo then I can go back to the other mobo and star trying to get it to work. My ATI 9200, GeForce 2 MX 400 both worked in the mobo that the fx does not.

    It lives!

The abit mobo now has an updated bios and can see my HDD. Windows XP is just installing all its drivers. No bsod either! Gone from an AMD system to Intel and its booted fine!

Will find out if this gpu works in a few mins!

    EDIT:

Well damn.. still borked.. Maybe the GPU got damaged in transit from Customer 's house back to mine :(

Maybe FX can't run in 2x AGP? Idk but I wouldn't waste time on either tbh..

FX was crap then it's crap now and iirc AMD were plagued with bugs at the beginning (well all vendors really).

But ABIT boards were golden and still worth playing with imho.an MX 440 or Ti4200 would be nice for that rig...:) Or the 9800 Pro if u can find one.

Maybe thats it. But cant check as I dont have a newer AGP mobo to test with.... yet.

Just put in a GeForce 2MX 400 and its working perfect.

Man those boards are friggen ancient. Both are prob AGP 1.0 particularly if ISA slots are present.

Gut feeling says FX could be AGP 3.0 which doesn't run in AGP 1.0 slots due to unsupported voltages. That's my edumecated hunch, but we're talking 15yrs ago so don't quote me. lol.
Seemed like every mobo or GPU back then conflicted with at least 1 other vendors hardware. Nvidia had problems running Geforce cards in their own boards. lol had to select x4 iirc.

    Ow my head hurts.

I've never had a card go to 4bit mode after it's drivers were installed without the GPU being borked....

As for LinkDrive's statement, there were a few AGP 8x cards that simply wouldn't work in an AGP 2x slot. Most of those wouldn't plug into the slots....but there were some that lacked electrical compatibility but would still plug into the slots.

nVidia's graphics cards had issues with the AMD compatible nForce2 and nForce3 chipsets.... That was my reason for building with a VIA K8T800 chipset instead of nForce.

Most AGP 8x cards were "keyed" for 1.5V (AGP 4x/8x) and weren't supposed to be physically compatible with the AGP 2x (aka AGP 3.3V) slots. Some nVidia cards were improperly manufactured and ended up being "keyed" for both 1.5V and 3.3V even though they wouldn't actually work in an AGP 2x (aka AGP 3.3V) slot.

This may well be the issue then. the FX is keyed for both 1.5 and 3.3 but the mobo's are keyed for 3.3

On a completely different note, what's going on with bit mining?

I've never seen so many GCN cards for sale at such great prices. VaporX and Toxic 7950/280x are going $300-$350 NZD. A month ago they were $400-450.

Did the bottom fall out of the bitcoin market?

I hope so, I can get a 280X for around £220 now vs the £350 it was only last week!

Id love to upgrade from my 7870 XT to a 280X 3GB

The ROI with graphics cards has gone to ****. Now they're using ASICs built specifically for bitcoin mining that are vastly more efficient.
