so i was doing maitance and all that on my old laptop that runs Vista business I noticed that Windows update started sitting ON checking after 6-17-2016 update. Nothing I did fixed this, I had manual isntall KB3078601: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3078601 Vista KB3109094: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3109094 Vista KB3185911: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3185911 Vista KB3191203: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3191203 Vista KB3203859: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3203859 Vista KB3204723: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3204723 Vista which found info at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...d3?msgId=1ef00080-91e9-4ffa-a5a3-92f6ecd69c32 Even after those updates I still think not fixed yes I know vista is old and I tempted to just format and install win10 on and see what happens, but I dont dont feel like do that though I might have to as Vista updates end this april?
I have had issues like that With Windows 7 based machines and there is a way to fix them but Vista I had issues fixing Windows update. I worked on an old Sony all in one PC that has Vista on it and it was having the same problem and rest it back to factory defaults and then installing all of updates again fixed that issue. Maybe backing up all of the files on it and restoring the laptop back to factory defaults and then reinstall of the updates again could fix this if you want to do that but like you said that you could upgrade the OS to Windows 10.
Don't . Get Windows 8, upgrade to Windows 10 and reinstall W8. Wait at least a year until it gets out of beta stage. Actually, it might as well never.
They messed up windows 7's WU and they probably did it to Vista. For 7 that was a hotfix that fixed WU but I don't have the KB# anymore. Try installing Win10 2016 LTSB instead.
no one likes win 8 most computer in the house are win 10 anyway so win 7 was messed up to but fixed and vista wasnt
maybe try this script - it applies to windows7-10, could be for Vista too https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Reset-WindowsUpdateps1-e0c5eb78
that didnt work anymore then when i manual reset it in. if fact the script didnt do alot things it was supposed to. Also noticed the svchost eating up alot ram and eating 50% cpu,, which remember being issue with vista. system is clean there there is no malware/virus/rootkits on it. And as far as I can remember that vista system always had svchost just randomly eating 50% and tons ram ever since the first day I got it.
Windows Update is broken with Vista. A clean install won't help either as at some point WU will stop working again when trying to bring it up to date. Believe me, I've tried. I have an old laptop and a desktop with Vista as main OS and both have exactly the same issue. Probably not what you want to hear but you'd be wasting your time trying to fix it. It's dead, MS killed it and have no intention of ever making it right.
You just have to be very patient. MS stopped caring about vista a long, long time ago. Even Windows 7 updates are now low priority, and take much longer than they used to. It's MS's way of helping people "realize they need Windows 10." It was the same on Vista and XP. Newer OS's update normally, and older OS's (in their final stages of support, and several generations behind current) now take forever to find updates....
Think I fix the svchost eating ram and 50% cpu I installed Visual C++ Redist Installer V50a and ran Easy NGEN option 1 the compiling alone was eating 50% cpu then the again everything on the laptop does is duo core too. the svchost eatting 1 gb ram was more issue seeing laptop only has 2 gb as for WU the is wasnt that it was taking for it was it would give me error and find nothing. for now it seem to be working.
For the first time after clean install you just have to wait for 2-3 hours. After that it's just a breeze.
