Friend has an opportunity to get a reference 780Ti for 300 euros, a 970 would cost 30-50 euros more, has 4GB ram. What would you say is best or what do you guys think?
Well at 300 euros its a tough choice a 970 will likely cost ~350-370 depending on which model. IF the 780ti isn't a used one its a 50-50 choice imho. If it's used then 970 easily
I got my 970 a week ago, runs BF4 in Ultra 2x AA anywhere between 80-130FPS. When the tower fell on Siege of Shanghai my 670 would drop to 20FPS. My 970 stays above 80FPS 64 man map. Ridiculous.
970 better than a 780ti?. Thought it'd be the other way around since the ti can be oc and I know the power and vram are cons in comparison, but shouldn't he get the more powerful card?.
Drivers are still super young for the 9 series. Over time they will gain in performance, and once bios is unlocked on the 9 series cards, even moreso. 780TI is not a bad card, but for the price of them still where they are at, no reason to not go 970 imo. In ops case, he can get a 780ti for much cheaper than most I'm sure, so its a bit closer. Would still pick 970 tho
That's not necessarily the case. Maxwell architecture has been on desktop for some time now in the form of the 750Ti, and Maxwell is still a derivative of Kepler, not an entirely new architecture, as far as I know. Benchmarks show the cards perform as expected for the hardware they pack and they still fall a bit behind even the 780Ti / 290X when running heavy titles at 4K due to the 256-bit memory bus. It's not like AMD's jump to GCN where benchmarks showed the cards had been held back until further improvements later on in that year. The 780Ti OCed will be faster than the 970 OCed with no exception, but it will draw more power and have less VRAM.
The 780 ti is a hell of a card. I have 970sli performance and near 980 sli performance for almost a year already. And at 4k the 780ti is actually faster. Though I run at 1440p so thats pretty irrelevant for me tbh
Absolutely, I don't debate this at all. What I would argue however is that for the vast majority of users, how the 970s perform in 4k is irrelevant since most people are still using 1080/1440. I personally don't plan to move to 4k for quite a while yet. Obviously if you're trying to run 4k the requirements change, and a beastly card like the 780ti would be more suited for this. I also very firmly beleive that performance, as with any other new graphics card released, ever, will get better with driver support. It just will. And honestly, the TI in many places is still more expensive than 970.. although the 970s are pretty scarce at the moment, for the price difference between the two compared to performance, in many titles the 970 is very close, and so honestly with the added vram, I still give the edge to the 970. I had an opportunity to get a 780TI (one) for ~$600 a couple weeks back. Then I got two 970 for ~$900 all in. I realize prices are going down on 780ti now, but they would have to drop to ~400 to be attractive enough, again all in my opinion.
1920x1080. 2xaa. All Ultra settings. I haven't tried 4xaa as I don't see a difference on my 23" monitor due to the distance at which I sit from it.
This. My 970 oc'd is roughly equal to the 780 oc'd it replaced. If he wants the faster card get the 780ti. If he cares about power draw, possible sli in future then get the 970.
Well also if dx12 games are actually in the work (ive heard about it, haven't bothered looking if true my self) with unreal4 -4.5 supporting it.. well choosing a 780 you might regret it in the not too distant future.
Depends... GTX 780 Ti is faster, especially if you overclock it. GTX 780 Ti @ 1300Mhz is as fast as GTX 980 @ 1500Mhz, so when GTX 780 Ti is overclocked - its definitely faster than overclocked GTX 970, but it does have only 3GB of VRAM. If you are on 1080p display, then I say GTX 780 Ti is a better option. Future games and even the ones that just came out, like Shadow of Mordor, do ask for 4-6GB VRAM cards, but my 3GB is plenty for 1080p and my GTX 780 Ti runs Shadow of Mordor PERFECTLY smooth with Ultra textures and settings that supposedly require a 6GB card. Sure, at times framerate dips down to 30fps, but 90% of the time, it stays between 40-70fps. My benchmark score: MIN. FPS = 44, AVG. FPS = 88, but during heavy fights, framerate does dip to 30-35fps on a rare occasion, creating a slight mini-stutters, but not like stutters in Watch Dogs and not in a way that would make the game less enjoyable IMHO. Some people need consistent and constant 60fps with double-buffering V-Sync to be happy, but neither GTX 780 Ti nor GTX 980 (and surely GTX 970) can provide that @ those Ultra settings and textures. You would need GTX 970 SLI for that, which isn't a bad option, especially now that MSI or whichever brand announced the LE version of GTX 970 that will still clock as good as any GTX 970 but at a lower price of... $375 or maybe even $350!
