    New versions will extend supported VRMs and display adapters list, the next VRM we're gonna support is L6788A (used on AMD RADEON 4770 and 5770 series). We'll also work on supporting new VRMs for other custom design MSI display adapters with custom voltage regulators.
    However, please don't expect this function to be added for any display adapter model you wish. To get it working display adapter must be equipped with programmable VRM. And the majority of reference design AMD/NVIDIA display adapters with programmable VRMs are already supported.

    Are you absolutely sure about reference 5850 cards being softmoddable? The first pictures indicate that there are no VT1165 chips on the PCB, here's an examplary close-up. On the other hand, Asus is supposed to release an overclocking tool of their own with the ability to increase the voltage of (probably only their) 5870 and 5850 cards - but I'd be very surprised if they used a custom PCB right after Cypress launch.

    The Volterra voltage controller is probably on the back of the card (take a look at the left hand side, see the small "V") :

    Unwinder, my HD4870 (yes) has a L6788A controller. Is it going to work ?

    Is it 4870 or 4770? Never heard about 4870 with this VRM onboard. Or is it a custom design card from some vendor like ASUS?
    Anyway no, it will not work in the current version. But we're going to add L6788A support (it is used on reference design 4770 and 5770 cards) in future versions. So it will add voltage control support for refernce design 4770 and 5770 series. So if your card is 4770 then yes, it will work. If that's a custom card from other vendor, then no promises on that.

    It's a 4870. XFX recent custom design.
    I can send you some debug stuff if you wish, just tell me whatever info you need.

    Thanks, nothing is needed yet. I'll need to implement generic L6788A support prior to getting a debug info. But I'll keep your offer in mind, thanks again.

    Thanks XLR8 for clearing that up.

    So imho there is not much point in investing 50% more money for the 5870 to get only 10% more shader power (at identical core and memory clock rates) and maybe some slightly higher overclocking margin (larger heatsink, one additional phase, an additional VT1165 for the memory voltage and possibly selected RV870 chips).

    Actually it's not XFX custom design of 4870, it's official ATI cost down design which only few AIB decide to take (most of AIB has their own custom design by the time ATI release this design). And good news is that this ATI ocost down design of 4870 uses L6788A as PWM, so when Afterburner support L6788A PWM of 4770 & 5770, I think it can support this XFX 4870 also.

    I agree, 5850 is definately the card to get, most people will go for it instead of 5870. It provides outstanding performance for its price and overclocking it should make it reach 5870 levels. Let's just hope ATI has enough of these cards to sell !
    Thanks for the tip and you know what ? you're probably right. I can see from those 5750 (Juniper) shots that the cooler looks very similar to this XFX 4870. I havent seen any cards based on this low cost design so far. Do you know any more cards using this design that I am not aware of ?

    We're 100% sure 5850 support voltage adjustment in Afterburner, because we already tested it :). So no worry, you can buy a MSI 5850 and try to overvoltage/overclock to similiar performance as 5870.

    I checked my database, 5750 actually user up6201 PWM (same as 4850), I haven't check if it support voltage regulator. For L6788A, only 4770/5770 reference card and 4870 reference cost down card use it AFAIK.

    I've just finished implementing voltage control via L6788A for reference design 4770 series. However, besides supporting the chip itself, it also required RV470 I2C access layer modification (due to some reason AMD desided to connect it to aux I2C bus instead of DDC bus where the VRMs reside on whole 4xxx family). So it won't automatically start working on your 4870, sorry. And doing similar modifications for RV770 just becasue of single 4870 on the market doesn't worth the efforts, sorry).

    It's funny because it's definately not the single card based on that design on the market, I just found out Sapphire has been using it for at least a couple of months now (regular 4870 model). After all, it's a reference design from ATI, not a custom card from AIB. If it's worth doing it, that's up to you to decide. I mean, think about it, you're going to have to do it for 5770 anyway.

    I just gave you fair warning to prevent you from having false hopes on new version, rembering that you've asked about L6788A support for your 4870 many times in different threads. Take it as a fact, no need to use "it is funny", "it is not single card" and "think about it" and similar tricks to make it forced, even if you really wish to get it. 5770 is absolutely out of context here and a different story.
    Probably you've misunderstood it so I repeat once again: just adding basic L6788A support to the core was not enough to get it working on 4770 series, it is connected to alternate aux I2C bus on these series so I had to modify I2C access layer in my dirver for RV740 to get it visible and working. If such L6788A connection also applies to RV770 then you may forget about it. I will not rewrite implemented and stable RV770 codepath in I2C driver too and risk I2C stability on the rest 48xx family because of few low-cost design models, furthermore considering that MSI don't sell such cards. Doing so would be just a waste of time and useless risk of breaking functionality on normal 4870/4870 X2/4890 with VT1165. So once again, take it as a fact.

    False alarm, Garrett captured I2C dump on such cost down 4870 card and happily L6788A resides on regular and already supported DDC2 bus. So no additional Rv770 I2C access layer modifications are needed, and it should work too (still NO ANY promises yet).

    Just like Unwinder said, he successfully implemented L6788A voltage control function into Afterburner, MSI will release Afterburner 1.3.0 early next week (hopely Monday) and you can happily start to adjust voltage of reference 4770 & 5770. (not for 5750, it doesn't support voltage control in hardware level).

    But I need to make it clear, Afterburner 1.3.0 and later version will NOT support ATI official 4870 cost down design card, the reason is simple: MSI never sell this card. So we don't want to waste Unwinder's time to support the cards which actually are manufactured by MSI's major competitors. If anyone make it work by using some special tricks, it's not covered by MSI official support and he/she should use it at his/her own risk.
