Hi, Ok, so my i7 920 died on me and I'm short on cash at the moment, so I have limited choices to replace it. I will be re-using everything else from my sig. I'm looking at the FX 6100 and the AsRock 970-Extreme3 which will work out to cost about $230 AUD total. The other option I have is to grab a i5 2500K and the ASUS P8Z77-V which will cost about $420 AUD total and mean I have to wait around a month to help spread out the cost out over a few pays. The main uses for my PC are gaming, video encoding, a little bit of photoshop and internet. Is the FX 6100 a good choice for the money or should I wait and get the i5?
Why not just get a second hand 920 or 930? They will be cheaper than both options and work with the board you already have. They're also still really solid performers (and in fact smash every chip in the FX line).
both the board and cpu crapped out, tested with my mates rig. It's also very hard to find them here in Aus now as it's old tech now no one stocks it, even second hand ones are a pain to find, been looking on ebay, gumtree (local for sale / trade site) and at the markets, haven't found a single x58 board at a good price
Comon mate you not looking hard enough. Plenty of cpu and mobo still for sale on ebay. I think i have astrock extreme mobo somewhere.
I've been able to find the ASROCK Extreme x58 mobo going for around $170 incl postage or a GA-X58A-UD3R for $230 inc postage, but no decently priced CPU's. All going for $200 +. Only thing with that is, I'm spending just as much as the 2500K would cost, which means I have to buy either CPU or Mobo now and the other one in a couple of weeks and risk not being able to find one
AsRock?????? NoWAYYYY take the asus crosshair v or the gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 at same price. but if you budget is low your specs will be low too..
The FX-6100 would be slower than your former i7 920. i7 920 or 930 does not "smash" every chip in the FX line up....lol

The Core i5 3570K is better than the FX-6100 and arguably better than your old Core i7 920. Just go for a Z77 chipset motherboard and pop in an Ivy Bridge CPU and call it a day. I did and it's much faster than my old AMD Phenom II 810 + AMD 770/780 (I switched between two motherboards) solution. deltatux
Remember the FX-8350 (piledriver) is meant to performance noticeably better, not to mention the even further improved 3rd gen which can also run on the AMD 970 chipset... not saying its a better option, just pointing out that the benefits are there.
You mean like three heavily threaded programs. In real world use an i7 965 will walk over any Bulldozer offering.

Fact is, which is the better choice depends strictly on usage. For transcoding/encoding, the FX processors are a viable option. For most games, they're still a viable option. Could they perform better? Sure. Could they use less power? Of course... But that doesn't change the fact that the i7 920 and 930 in fact do not "smash" the entire FX line. The FX line is in fact competitive with the Clarkdale, Lynnfield and Nehalem based Core processors and in some cases can actually outperform i5 2500K and i7 2600K.
Thanks for the help guys. I might have lucked out, I left the mobo & CPU with my mate and after lots of messing around with it last night he said he managed to get the CPU to boot on his board. He is running through testing it with Prime & my RAM sticks to make sure it's not damaged. If it turns out to be working OK i'll try and pick up a new mobo, if not i'll wait and get the 2500K.
It's real world use....and proves you wrong. Exactly how are 2 real-world usage scenarios "cherry picking"??? I could have gone for synthetic benchmarks....but that actually would be "cherry picking". Since the OP plainly stated that he intends to use his system for encoding and gaming, the benchmarks I presented are 100% relevent as they apply directly to the OP's own usage scenario.
